Hilux Gearbox Problems
Hi Everyone,
its my first post and i searched a bit and couldnt find anything but sorry if it has been covered before... Anyway here's my problem..
I Purchaced my 86' Hilux about 2 months ago and it seemed like a good buy, went well, no smoke and the box & t-case had no problems i could see\hear\feel. even after a weekend of light offroading, no problems, but all of a sudden i get a clicking noise from around the box\case assembly it clicks in neutral, idling, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, perfect in 4th, and clicks in 5th. and it is like this in all the transfer case positions (h2, h4, n, l4) and i think the thrust bearing is on its way out because it makes a squealing noise when i press the clutch
im not sure if it makes a diffrence, but it has had a v8 conversion with a HZ monaro 253 on gas, mabey too much torque for the box?

thanks guys, i whent to a few mechs, and made em have a small drive and they have narrowed it down to two possibilities:
1: Thrust bearing is totaled and is out of its race
2: input shaft hase lost a tooth because the v8 porduces too much torque for the box
i was told that i should dump the box's oil and search for chunks and granules of metal, so ill be doing this over the weekend, if there is chunks im in for an expensive bill, otherwise the thrust bearing is not too painful on the wallet.......
but if it is infact the box that is straining under the v8's overpowering torque, i was told by mark's 4wd adaptors that a toyota dyna truck gearbox might be a better option, although they are around $4000.00AUD including labour and adapter plates, or a standard box, which i found to be $880.00AUD not installed
are there any other options that i havent mentioned that might help if i need a new box?

change it to automatic good conversion for 4 grand
as for the manual sounds like gear noise especially when there is no noise in 4th because the main shaft is turning as a complete unit not using the cluster shaft at all and rules out the input bearing and rear main shaft bearing also and if it was the transfer/diff it would not shut up in 4th.

Look fot a w56 hilux g/box 25% + stronger than the g52 box you have in it ATM.They are the same as the supra boxes i think but you dont have to do any conversions and get the same result .Speak or P.M RUFF or SUPRASURF they know their shit about these boxes as i did a supra box conversion and wish i didn't now after finding this info out.GOOD LUCK

i finaly got around to dumping the oil out of the gearbox, and i was quite mesmorized to the fact that i was getting any foreward motion at all!! there was three huge chunks i assume where once teeth and quite a bit of metalic granules that im still picking out from under my nails
so now the ony choice is either a changover box or the dyna box, the main thing im worried about is ratios, the dyna box has very close ratios, which are great for offroad, but i do still do a fair bit of highway driving too, the ratios for the dyna box im planning on buying are
1st 5.15:1
2nd 2.87:1
3rd 1.50:1
4th 1:1 and
5th 0.83:1 or 17% overdrive
with the setup as it is, before it died, 1st was a waste of time, i got about 2 car lengths before i was revving the engine more then i like to, imfact i could release the clutch completely without touching the throttle without stalling!!

I have a Marks dyna box in my 2.8 turbo and reckon 1st (5.15) is much better when 4wding. Half the time I take off in second gear when on flat ground, You dont have to use it.
You can also save money by fitting it yourself. You just need two trolley jacks on a bit of flat concrete.
Oh and a big hammer For the transmission tunnel.
