for some reason the glowplugs will not turn on/glow. There is no light in the dash and i have tried leaving ignition on for awhile but that doesnt work either!! It was working then i turned engine off, tryed to start and i had nothing. Is there a fuse somewhere??? or is it worse??

I had a problem like that...just like you one moment OK , next not Ok. I checked all the fuses, electrics and solenoids, nothing wrong.

Finaly, bought 4 new glo plugs and everthing was OK.

Sounds like you may have 1 or more defective glo-plugs, so I say replace them all.

ok, you haven't said anything about the model of truck you have. I'll assume you have a Hilux same as mine. If so, the glow plug timing actuator might be playing up. In the LN106 the box is in the front passenger's kickwall at their feet, behind a little bit of plastic. When my truck went volintarily swimmin my went a bit screwy for a while, but when the water dried up, it was all good.

But then again, your problem might be totally different.

One thing you can try, is pull out the glowies, and get two pieces of good wire, and affix them to either side of the battery and then to the glow plugs. They should immediatly start glowing and getting bloody hot. If they don't, they are screwed. (or your battery is dead :P )

Sorry, It is an 84' lux.. (2l) We have no power to the CD player or UHF as well

Unfortunitly no i dont have a flat battery.

So far i can figure...CD player and UHF are the only things that don't have power, from tthe same wire that goes into the ignition switch everything else in the ignition switch working ok. NO glow plug light and no power to glow plugs.

Has my ignition switch a goner????

sounds like you may have done a fusible link in the wiring. I am not too familar witht eh Hi-lux's just check your workshop book and it will tell you where they are.

I am assuming that you have checked all the fuses and relays in the system first.

you can start it without glowing the plugs (although its not recommended)

it's more or less impossible to start a cold, indirect injected diesel without glow. try pulling your glow fusible link and then try to crank the motor when it's cold. it won't start.

back to the problem at hand, I'd get a multimeter or test lamp and check to see if there is voltage at the plug bus bar with the ignition switched on. if not, work from the battery - check the fusible link, controller (if there is one), glow relay and wiring. if there is voltage there, then it is probably the plugs.

i' ve done it :finger:

was out camping (only my truck there) no one to jump me.

battery was nearlly flat, and if i glow'd the plugs, it wouldn't have enought juice to start. so just did it off the cuff. i felt bad doing it, but i had no choice.

you can start an indirect injection diesel without glowplugs...

even if you boil a couple of big pots of water, tip em slowly over the head... it helps... i've started my old troopy in the snow like that

if the battery is too flat to glow, it's way way too flat to crank. If you just turn the key straight to 'start', but do not disconnect the glow fusible link, the plugs will still glow. It does not take much glow, but it needs some.

so you're replacing the function of the glows with hot water - the effect is the same, putting some heat into the head before you try and crank.

I have read all the posts and they are more or less exactly what I did.

So, I replaced all the glo plugs and the engine started 1st time.

Reccommend you change the Glo-Plugs.

I know you think i should replace them, but did you check ne wiring with urs or did you just replace the glow plugs???....its just i havnt got that much money so i want to be fairly sure

Yes, I checked for 2 nights. I could not find anything wrong with the electrics...and I am Electric by trades. I started the engine using the petrol trick, drove round to the local workshop. They had it running within 1hr...just replaced the glo plugs after I told them I'd checked the electrics.

I am not saying this is your problem, but after reading what you have done and checked, sounds to it is. Make sure you actually check all the fuses, solenoids etc...I note you have a problem on UHF. Can you hear the soloniod click in for the pre-heat...if not maybe thats the cause.

Better check out you UHF as well.


Petrol Trick

If you want to start your vehicle disconect the air intake close to the engine. Have someone hold a rag dowsed in a little petrol over the ait intake on the petrol side...but keep soem space for air. Allow a few mins for the fumes to penetrate ...Start the engine....the person holding the rag must whip it away pretty quicky...and don't let go of the rag.

thanks gotoy. I am replacing the plugs hopefully this weekend as a few others have told me the same thing, GLow Plugs are dead

Firstly, thanks for all the help

The Solution: Went to libary and got manual on the hilux's glowplugs and their wiring system, got a voltage measure thingy, and started testing everything starting at the glow plugs and working way back, till i eventually found a Fusable rely that looked ok but wasnt!. Put new one in and the old girl lives again
