TD42 Thermostat

Changed out my TD42 '89 GQ thermostat the other day as the engine was taking forever to warm up. Noticed the old thermostat was stuck about 3mm open when cool.
Now the car warms up fine but makes a funny noise until the thermostat opens up. The new aftermarket one is fully closed when cold.
Is the thermostat meant to be open slightly on the TD42's??

most thermostats i have seen in the past have a small hole about 3mm round, allows the water to still curculate, without puttin excessiv4e strain on the water pump, not sure about the td42's as ive never changed one,

my td42 doesnt make any odd noises while warming up,

I keep meaning to change mine as it takes forever to warm up too.
how much was it and has it made much difference?

there is a air lock behind the thermostate drill a 1/8 hole in the stat this will allow air to pass through
build em tuff, drive em ruff.........

did mine a couple weeks ago as mine was also taking too long to warm up.

I bought a geniune nissan one for $35 odd dollars and a few bucks for the gasket. The thermostat should be completely closed when cold and should only open when the water reaches operating temp. The geniune one also has a small 3mm or so hole to allow any air locks to get by when bleeding......

Mine did not and does not make any noise. The old thermostat was stuck open and hence the reason it took so long to warm up and it operates too low on the temp gauge, most of the time at the bottom line.

When you change thermostat it is extremely important to ensure that you have no air caught in the cooling system. I bleed mine with the nose of the car on a slight incline and left it there till I knew the new thermostat had fully opened and there was no air in the system. Your problem may be either air or a noisy water pump bearing due to the small added pressure of the new thermostat.
