I got the longest rancho's available at the time that didnt need adaptors.

I think the rear was 33" and 28" front.

HOW LONG SHOCKS SHOULD BE FOR A 4'' LIFT ? (GQ)

Post by bucketofbolts »

mine are doing the same, running out of travel way to early, the mob i bought the kit from, did send me the wrong shocks, but even the shocks he's wants to send me still sound to short, so what he wants me to do is let him know how long i want them and he will swap them over, at full extension there 655mm and are only 30mm longer than the ones i took out, and the ones he wants to send me are only 677mm full extened

The shocks I put on my 4" lift are 555/322 front and 716/426 on the rear.

I never really looked to see how much longer than needed they were - just threw them on...haven't had any problems at all.

Every spring and shock supplier is different so to get the best fit measure it up with the springs in and tyres on for extended and compression and order the length you need from your shocky surplier and they will find the closest match they can.

Try ramping it and see what happens with no shocks fitted this will give max flex of springs.
I need to do this on the rear as with the current springs I have I can still get the bumpstops to hit. But the spring is still firm in the seat so I know it can take more droop.

If flexing on a ramp is abit unstable try finding a spot where you can get it full crossed up. With the shocks disconnected. Then measure the distance between the mounting points.

yeah, havn't really done anything with the front yet, apart from the shocks supplied with the kit, just trying to get the rear sorted out first. the front doesn't work that well at the best of times, not unless you spend big bucks, its not to bad though. will post up some pics soon of it up a ramp and show you how much flex it has, front and rear, this was before i fitted the longer shocks, (ignore the ramp, i colored it in so people wouldn't winge about safety)

Here's the specs for my Maverick SWB. note that LWB could be different.

Feel free to use them for the bible... in fact it'd be great so I dont lose them.

PS I only grabbed one h

Lengths for shocks (expanded/compressed):

Standard:

Front KYB 56110 01J00 325mm compressed / 517mm expanded
Rear KYB 56210 01J00 385mm compressed / 615mm expanded

EFS standard 2"

Front: EFS 36-5592 383mm compressed / 600mm expanded
Rear: EFS xx-xxxx 410mm compressed / 660mm expanded
(didnt record it)

Rear Xtra Long:
EFS 36-5549 didnt record but believe 715-745mm expanded. Can measure some day..... some day :D

From memory the same front shock is specified for 3" lift (considering the 83mm extended lenght that's ok). I think the extra long rears are basically the same length as 4" lift.

Rear spring: free length 455mm tall 16mm thick. 7 1/2 turns.

Front spring: free length 400mm tall 15mm thick. 6 1/2 turns.

note this is from a 88 SWB XLT maverick with 200,000+ Kms. may not be completely representative.

Im using ridepro comp shocks, rear 740ishmm extended, 435mm closed, fronts 655mm washer step to washer step open, 450mm ish closed.

Around $160ish ea, for 4-6" lift, but may need springs to be held captive, if not ridepro springs, I have found with mine.
