good idle, seems to missfire when reving and under load

Post by icebreaker »

Well...

After having spent $1850 on the lil truck, I appear to be almost back where I started...

What was wrong:
Head had 3 cracks. headers 2 cracks.

What was done..
another head was sourced and rebuilt.
hurrican headers fitted
new O2 sensor
new timing belt
I've been told the timing was done..

Engine idles perfectly. when reving, taking off and under general load the engine tends to have the sound of a WRX engine, which after having a change to Built4Thrashing it appears the problem would be misfiring...

I found I was blowing alot of smoke still last night, so after having a smoke and trying to de-stress, I disconntect the battery for a while. Hooked it back up, took it for a spin and reved it up again in the garage.. The smoking problem appears to have gone away at least.

But the misfiring hasn't...

So what could it be??

Jayson and I have been discussing it, and we suspect the usual..

Leads, Spark Plugs... These are obviously the easiest so if the leads aren't around $130 I'll order a new set to make sure it's not them.
Timing.. idle is good, and power is good once the engine hits about 4,500-5,000.. I'v eonly been reving upto 3-3,500 to run in the head, but to work out WTF is going on i've given it abit of a rev to try and clarify the situation.

Anything else?

Cold start is perfect also.

Thanks guys,

Dan

make sure you check ur cap and rotors... ensure that ur rotors are not worn and ur cap isnt cracked. also check ur dizzy to make sure the body isnt cracked as well.

The dizzy appears to be ok.

the cap is worn abit, Jayson and I cleaned it up a few months ago, and it hasn't done 5,000k's since... But i'm planning to replace the cap and the rotor.

I got water in the cap at the jet wash some months ago.. what are the chances of this causing problems with the dizzy??? or is it a case of once the cap drys out that's it.

shouldnt be a problem at all. once its dry it should be fine... BUT you might want to check for resude on the rotors and the cap from dried soap and what not. jus how worn are the rotors? when i replaced my cap, the rotors were worn clear down to the bush housing and it still ran!

so be careful there. did you also check your timing? that might have a thing to do with it maybe....

any updates?

Hey Dan, is that all that's wrong? That it sounds like a WRX???

That's normal with the Hurricane headers!!! Mine does an excellent impression of a WRX at low revs- just wish it had the power of one....
