Spotties and Water

Post by EricB »

Got a pair of Narva Blues for my birthday couple of months ago and used them for the first time on Sat night. Was very pleased with them until one of the last holes and the lights got wet.
Both cracked. I was wondering if it was because of the clear covers on them traping water between the glass and plastic, cooling then cracking the glass? Or should I have stopped using the spotties and let them cool before going near water? :? Would they have cracked if the clear covers were off?

Cheers

cracked

They would most likley crack with or without the covers. It is because of the heat in the lamp and the cool temp of the water.

I found this out the hard way after cracking both Hella Ralley 4000's with covers and my headlights on a dark cold night crossing a swollen river.

Autobarn contacted Narva for me. Narva said it is not covered under warranty. But they will replace the lenses for me anyway

It is true that they probably would have cracked anyway - however the plastic lens cover will lead to a build up of heat more quickly than a lens that is getting airflow directly over it without the cover. It is probably only a small difference but in some instances enough to differentiate between a cracked lens or not for example if the lights have not been on for long and the lens would not yet have reached it's normal operating temperature..

Yeah the lense cover bubbled also so there must have been a bit of head between the lense and cover. I was thinking why the head lights do not crack the same way.

I'll know for next time.

Sorry to bring up again, so should you turn off your spotties before getting them wet?
Even just standard ones like 100w Narvas or something?

I've had headlights crack.
I went for the Lightforce spotties as being all plastic they (theoretically) wont crack.

As far as night driving goes, i've done it once not long ago and it was great fun. Can't wait to do it again.

Cheers
