Okay after my series three gears exploded the week before the Bathurst round of We Rock I have been trying to decide weather to just put a new set in or try something different.
As i will be building a buggy i decided to turn the Vit into a tow vehicle.(did try selling it but had no interest)I still wanted it to be able to be wheeled as well.Wanting to use it as a tow vehicle pretty much ruled out the fact of using the sierra transfer.
One of my apprentices (GURU) is a mad Rover nut and he isn't a Queenslander. So we measure up the engine bay of the Vit and decided that we should be able to squeeze the running gear out of a Rover into it.
So in the next couple of weeks we will be fitting a 3.5 litre V8 C4 transmission and rover transfer case..Coupled with the 60 series diffs already under it should make it a strong driveline for towing and still be able to be wheeled.
I will be taking photo's of the conversion as we go and Tim will post them as they come through.

Is the Vitara body compatable with the rangie chassis?
I know you have cois already but this would most probably be easier to engineer with a heavier tow rating.
Not sure what tow rating you would end up with combining, Vit chassis (1,500kg or so tow rating) 60 series diffs (3,000kg or so tow rated car) rangie box and engine (3,000 kg or so tow rating). I would expect that it would be the lesser of the combination?
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
the vit chassis is wider than the Rangie one.
The reason for using the Vit body and chassis is that all the suspension and stuff is sorted just need more power. As far as the towing capacity goes hadn't really thought about what it would then become mighyt have a chat to the engineer and see what he says.
The Vit weighs 1400kg in its current form so i guess with the new combo in it it will be closer to 1700kg.

Not sure about NSW but in QLD you can not increase the towing Capacity of a Vehicle no mater how you modify it. You can increase Payload capacity but not Towing.
Guy in our club here has one. SWB, SAS, carbed Rover V8, external cage etc etc. Always seemed to have engine issues (for the past few years!!). But when is was running right it was bloody impressive. A few others running round with the lexus V8's and SAS as well. Will see if I can find any pics

Looking at it all together i am a little concerned for space.Mainly the transmission tunnell. Will pull the old donk out tomorrrow and start cutting.
Pics will come.

the conversion is looking good, fits in pretty well on slight transmission tunnel mods nedded, there was mumbles bout making a kit for the conversion aswell
theres a guy at work with a 327 in a bundera chassis with a sierra body, on 35s and its engineered for qld rego. he went the 'individually constructed vehicle' route, so anythings possible. you just need to do your homework and plan it out before you reach for some tube and the oxy. as soon as i get more details, i will post up (only met the guy yesterday for like 5 minutes)
Okay bit of an update.
All is in and was suprisingly easy.
All the mounts for the engine and gearbox use the standard chassis mounts.
As we were using the torquflight gearbox there was some triming to be done on the passengers side footwell to ccomidate the linkages.
Radiator had to go in the back as the engine is longer and the water pump sits where the radiator normaly is.
Transfer shifter caome up in through the hole which normally haas the manual shifter in it.Standard boot fits back on.
All in all this has been one of the easiest conversions we have carried out.
Having trouble downloading pics at the moment so when i sort that out i will post them.
