noisy diesels
noisy diesels
I have 93 gq td42 with 178 k on it. I have had a fair load of diesel vehicles over the years but I find this Patrol has almost an engine sound of its own. Don`t see many over here but managed to hear one the other day and it sounded exactly like mine......a kind of chuffing whirling sounding diesel. Sound familiar to you guys? I actualy prefer the sound of my little 2.25 Landy diesel unit. Patrol is bog standard. Anyone else got an opinion on the sound of it?

Love it to pieces!!!!!
Bigger pipe and a we bit of performance tunning and they go like a cut cat.
All thats lacking is a bit of sound proofing under the bonnet and around the fire wall on the earlier modles such as mine.
We have series three LWB LR with the standard diesel. Horrible. Just Horrible. Noisey clunky sounding old thing. And thats after its been rebuilt.

When you say bigger pipe do you bin everything except the original manifold and just build a new system with same amount of boxes but say two and a half inch pipe. I like the engine too but in modern terms it is as underpowered for its size as Rovers old 2.25.That is prolly why it lasts so long.Saving grace is that its tuneable cos of its strength but that means money. Rover diesel is bound to be noisy.........it was designed in 1958........

I cheated, i left the pipe the orgional diameter and just romoved all the resrictions, eg, silencers, resonator and flexi joint.
Replaced with a single straight through silencer box.
Big improvement.
Going to 3" pipe on a NA TD42 is quite common over here, but i doubt its really that effective.
Advancing the injector timing up to .075 BDC makes a huge improvement on performance, but more smoke and a noisier engine.
New injectors set to a higher pressure make a big difference also.
I run a foam filter to.
Am starting to get pissed of with people thinking its turboed!!!!!!
I also have a Holly fuel pump , but thats to combat fule starvation caused by the above changes
