Twin winch motor setup
Hey does anyone have any info and prices on wat cass jones does to get a twin winch setup.

They also have their own issues......like if one motor isn't working at the same speed as the other, it acts as a brake to the whole system. Email Donald Preston in NZ as he had it set up on his Jeep last year. Truck is now sold, but Donald is a good source of info.

I think cass does the modifacation like the one in the pic, he has an adapter plate that joins the second winch to the first. I dont like the twin highmount, this way is cheaper(well i am geussing). In the pic, its got two 6hp winches. Bloody Awsome. But i want to get two 7.8hp motors I am geussing it would be fractionaly faster but it would definetly have more torque.

so for the pics above, if he is using two motors coupled together, he is developing twice the stall torque?? correct?? but using 6hp motors so a bit more than twice what the winch is rated for?? how does the highmount casting and gearset/brake stand up to this?? do they fail when running 8000lb stall torque or can they cope with the 16000lb+ he is generating(provided he stalls it)??

At a guess at looking at the pics and them in real life. I would say other than the gearbox being tapped for oil fill and drain. It is std.
The only things to be modded are the drum and the motors.
The drum looks to have been widened, which Mal Leslie does alot of. And it has had a bearing mounted onto the end of the drum which goes into the end plate. Birdys has a complete remanufactured end plate though. Think Shreqs was the Std warn item just with the tie rod mounts welded on.
And the motors use a common shaft onto the std gearbox. Birdys first model died at the OBC on the mud stages and just bolted a normal 6hp motor on to continue the comp. Oh and pretty sure they are std 12v 6hp warn motors. Just being fed 24v's.

I was at Ateco all weekend and yes, the twin motor setup does pull well.
On sundays ss12 the group was started 1st to last.
The more equipped cars went first and made the creek crossing look like an easy winch,
later cars saw the winches stuggling to the point of nearly stalling, not to mention busting ropes.
Mind you, the creek crossing did get dug out a hell of a lot more during the day.
I'm sure there were other people on other stages that weekend that could comment?

u would be right there about the crusier park rig but it is set up to have one motor running, spooling in and one for spooling out run the 6hp motors

as tuff and bling etc as it is i think they should start capping the winch mods. some of the events i have been to the same teams went through like 3 motors in one day, at what $400 each. expenditure on gu diffs or whatever are a justifyable mod, that only require maintainence. Why must everyone now spend 4-5K on a winch plus how many $400 now disposable motors to remain competitive. so many dnf's too.
should be capped at say 8hp of motor power, voltage per motor std manufacturer requirements, bracing free, drum width free, automated freespool free, cooling free. something like that.
increasing the output also increases the load on the cable and internal components and could prove plain dangerous when they let go. in any case the winch in time is always much faster than the cable run out time. are they going to run dual navigators to reduce that time or increase their heart rate to 330bpm
