Speakers in a lux?
I got a 96 Dualcab Hilux and want to do something with the stereo. I have a SONY MP3 Player and a big ORION 4 channel Amp.
what I was thinking was a 10" SUB or maybe 2 behind the back seat - anyone made a box that fits in th small space? if so PM me the dimensions and a pic please
Now for the front I was going to build up some door pods to house a 6" or 8" woofer and then a 4" mid and 1" tweeter. Also pics would be appreciated if someone has done this before ...
If someone knows car audio and lux's that has done something similar could let me know how it sounds is it worth the hassle?
Cheers

The cost of building something behind the seat wouldn't be worth the hassle. I looked at it a while ago and gave up trying to get some sort of useabel volume in a box to drive a woofer well.
Might be a better option to make a tube for a 6 or 8 inch driver to sit on the floor behind the front seats, that way it's easily removable for back seat passengers and you keep the room behind the seat for recovery gear and other stuff.
I've got a four channel amp mounted behind the back seat with the stacker but the stacker is coming out when I get a head unit with a cd player, still got a tape one ATM...
In the doors I've got 6x9's on a 18mm mdf panel build out, so long as you got quarter glass windows then there's plenty of room in the front doors, not too sure about the back though.
edit, some good pics on this thread

pioneer has a new slim line sub out atm, fits behind the passenger seat of a hilux shmicko, Audiocom has a deal on atm for a 12" slimline sub and 1000w class D pioneer amp for $799. The amp is tiny aswell because it's all digital. Pretty impressive.. My hilux got broken into on friday night n everything nicked so I might be upgrading to .this depending on insurance.. Worth a thought
in my single cab luxy i have jvc head deck, jvc 6" speakers in the door and jvc 6 by 9's behind the seat, goes pretty well, wish i had a sub
98 Xtra Cab Lux.... slowly filling up with the Budscustoms Catalogue : Street, Track & Trail - Parts & Fabrication

in my 84 single cab i have 2 6x9's behind the seat and a 10 inch sub between the 2 serats runnign off a 1000 w amp goes well but i dont have a pic as the interior is all out at the moment
84lux-project. A-frame, 350 chev, turbo 350 auto, duals, rears up front, crossover, twin locked and a 118" wheelbase
In my LN106 i got a JVC MP3 headdeck and TV in dash, big Coustic amp behind the back seat, 300W inverter behind the beck seat powering the xbox which is temporarly mounted (read: sitting) on the back seat. Two 6"x9" JL Audio 3 ways are in the front doors, while 6" JL Audio dual cones are in the rear doors. My 12" subwoofer is in a box nounted behind the drivers seat, which is kinda shit, becasue i lose the ability to carry around me and 4 drunks, but i prefer it this way. If you try to squeeze a woofer behind the rear seat, you potentially starve it of room for resonance.
My stereo cranks pretty damn hard, outdoes a lot of my mates with big ass stereos in there rice burners. At the moment i'm trying to rig up some way to integrate my ipod to it all...
if you got any questions, just ask mate...

yeah Jason,
they are pretty nifty (and $200 mind you) but the bummer is they only work for Alpine... nothing for JVC as far as i know. What i'm probably going to do is get a 3mm headphone jack to twin RCA adapter and just run it through my line in on my headunit. it won't be as good as the Alpine one (i hate alpine anyway), which you can change tracks with etc. i'll have to change tracks on the actual ipod, and volume on the headunit... get my drift

sorry for the thread hijack...phippsy wrote:Apart from the cost, what don't you like about Alpine, my head/unit stacker is almost 9 years old and it's only cause it won't do mp3 that I'm looking at upgrading
nah i just think that Alpine / Pioneer (to an extent) / kenwood / sony etc are all really behind in the market for top end headunits... most of these don't even have LCD displays on their mid market units. JVC was one of the FIRST to bring out mp3 players in cars, and are still innovating new tech all the time. things like 65K TFT displays on single DIN headunits... under $500 is also pretty neat. JVC and Pioneer also have 2 line out's, a sub pre-out, as well as 4 channel out from the unit, meaning, you can pretty much power a pretty boomin system from just the headdeck. (its got 50w x 4 channel out as well )
it also has a lot to do with personal choice too. I've had heaps of stereo's over the times, and i reckon for after sales service jvc rocks. my unit started playing up after my truck went swimming and i returned it under warranty and got the next model up for free
if you want a good unit that has great bang for buck, have a look at panasonic. they gots some good shit thats pretty darn cheap.
sorry for the long ass post

however I find the quality of pioneer head units are amazing I had a pioneer deck that has been in and out of my last 2 cars over 3 years n it hasn't missed a beat.
I'm running a pioneer deck with 12cd stacker, 300w 2 channel pioneer amp runs the pioneer splits in the doors, n the deck runs 4" pioneers in the dash, n 'had' pioneer 6x9's in boxes behind my seat, It cranks!! guess all that in a single cab is a bit overkill but sounds good.
Until some theiving lil c$nts stole it all..
Now im updating thanks to insurance

So no-one has made up a sub box for behind the back seat of a dualcab?
I know there is not a lot of room there but a sub on the floor behind the front sets is not an option as my 3 kids wouldn't take long to stand, jump on it :(

I have a panasonic mp3 Head unit and 6" Pioneer's in the Front doors.
Also Have 4" in the dash, but turned them off as they are crap.(pioneer 4" Kevlar $150)
Alpine Rtype 12" Sub in the back seat with a Kenwood Amp mounted behind the Back seat.
I love Liquid Nails.
How do you like that.
Panasonic
Pioneer
Alpine
Kenwood
Would go for a pioneer Head unit next time.

Re: speakers
Not that I've seen. In talking with the guy at Northfield yesterday he did mention though that Alpine had brought out a sub for applications where there was not much depth available for the box. He guessed that it was somewhere around 2 to 3 inches in depth and still went well.whiteknight wrote:So no-one has made up a sub box for behind the back seat of a dualcab?

What have people used in the back doors of your lux's? Or have the speakers been mounted in a pod setup, any pics would be good.
I went thru the subwoofer thing a year ago, and back then couldn't find someone to do a box for behind rear seat. There is just not enough room, altho I have a pair of 12's.
For retaining rear seat the options are-
Take out back window and build a box up there(external) with the subs staring in your rear vision mirror like 2 eyes.
Take out rear seat and build a sub box backrest- a bit hard on the kiddies for trips.
Take out the rear seat, replace with 2 slim buckets (Suz GTi or similar) and build a box (with armrest) in centre- an installation guy thought this was best option.
Build a fully external box behind cab under tray and port into cabin. Probably only an option with a custom made tray.

i have been keen on this option for ages... a few things hold me back though. In QLD you have to get your car re-engineered (and re-registered) as a 4 seater, and that stinks of effort. if anyone has done it, or has seen it done, i would love to see some pics of it, or hear how they thought it looked.
