How fragile?

Post by Bajan Tim »

Hi all i have been browsing your forum for a while. I have seen it mentioned a few times about the fragile front axels/cvs on the coil spring sierra, was considering a welded front but now I'm a bit scheptical. How fragile are they really????

I think they are similar size to the smaller 1.0 litre sierras front ends.
Obviously weaker, but my 1.0 litre sierra front end has never busted, even with bigger tyres, 1300 and lower gearing.
Under some circumstances welded up is better, as breakage often occurs when a spinning wheel in the air suddenly gets traction. This is less likely with a locked front.
I don't know if there is any build problems/quality issues, tho.
Just drive it in a way that doesn't stress front end.

it is a myth about the axles...

they are the same diameter and spline as a wt sierra...

the cv,s are the same as a nt 1.3 sierra...

I should know better than to believe everything I read on the net

We have only a few coileys in the club, none have broke anything in front end, as yet. Only issue has been lack of available front lockers, so I'm told ???

Thanks for the input guys. I'm in Barados, it's all about mud here and the guys generally dont go out unless it has been raining. Bought mine a year ago and now I'm about to make a project of it. Was a bit concerned for a while because I thought I wasn't going to be able to lift it, there is next to nothing available here for the coilys in terms of suspension. I plan to do a 2 inch spring lift, 2 inch body lift, fit some 31's from Interco, lockright in the rear and welded front. Then I will put a rockcrawler transfer case in. Found lots of useful info here and I'm glad that I dont have to reinvent the wheel.

By the way, where is a good source for the springs? Pedders? Suzisport? Would appreciate some guidence on that.

Thanks
