82 sierra motor

Post by -ZukChiK- »

I must have the suzuki bug, I'm picking up a 1L 82 zook for parts this week (more the transfer case & some other bits, flogging the rest - body is bogged & crap) I have a question to ask regarding the motor though, as I'm sure it is a replacement - it has Maruti in it. Maruti didn't come out til 90's or earlier? If this is the case is the motor worth much obviously being newer than the original, or did the early model NT's come with a Maruti 1L engine? I found out a bit of info on the forum when I was looking up transfer case stuff.... but not much else as I skimmed over a few topics then got bored. Any thoughts on the 82? The motor runs well by the sounds of it.

Cheers , SSC

i've fitted a 1.3lt case into an 82 1.0lt zook......using the early 1.0lt mounts on the 1.3lt case.....

the only difference was the flanges are different sizes and I redrilled the flanges to suit the 1.0lt shafts..........

cases are basically all the same on the outside only gearing and flanges differ.

Hi nicbeer,

Even if modified ? flange etc? I wasn't fully certain about compatibility but thought any t-case would possibly fit a early 90's with some mucking around (?) If not, learn me up some more!

Either way, I'm getting it as a wreck... for the fun & experience of cutting it up for study & parts

So, the situation could be reversed? i.e. 1982 1L into a 1.3.
I know there is discussion of this in other threads... will check again. Where is the Christover messiah of info?! LOL

I was really wanting to know in this thread if the Maruti motor is the original? And if not, when did the first Maruti 1L come into Aust?

Don't know, but its definitely got a Maruti logo stamped onto the motor instead of Sierra one..... I thought Maruti's started filtering in around the time I bought my 91 zook, whether they be classified as 'imported' or not I don't know. They were very popular with farmers around our region at the time. The cheapest utes on the market! I would say the one I got is a replacement motor.... as 1L maruti motors are easy to come by (?) Isn't there a website that traces the sierra history in Oz for reference?

I thought the sierra was made for the australian market and the maruti for overseas market... that any maruti found here was a private import at some stage???

Nah, I don't think so... Our local Suzi dealership had them stocked in the car yard, as an Australian import , same as the sierra's. All I know is (i was told) they were made in India, not Japan. And were a cheaper LWB ute body aimed at farmers, fisherman etc as the sierra body around early 90's wasn't made in LWB anymore.... just HT, ST & Hi T. ie if you wanted a LWB after the 80's models, you could only get it in Maruti. I could be wrong, but thats all I can remember of how the story went at the time

Hey bigred,

Do you know exactly what year the maruti's came out to Oz? Im just trying to determine how old the motor is in the zook Im picking up 2mo... Or, where would I look for a build date on a motor?
