Custom Ute Conversion
Ok, I have searched and not really found any up to dater information.
I have a short wheel base, soft top, Mercedes G-Wagen thats really impractical at the moment. Want to make it into a single cab ute.
Who in Victoria (preferably) can do this and do it well. Price aint an issue, want a good job done.
Cheers

DAMN'T you're like the first person on this board with a GWagon. I have been eyeing a few of those off. Bright red LWB heheheh
THey sound good on paper if you get the ones w/ f/r lockers and the 5 cyclinder diesel. Then I would A-Frame the rear and 5 link the front. How does it flex ?? I have been told they suck a bit of anus with the standard links...
Do show and tell...

I have one, the GF has one and we have about 5 others at work. A couple of 230GE's, Turbo Diesel and a couple of 300GE's. One is an AMG V8 model and it is silly powerful!
They all come with factory diff locks etcl.........
There is going to be a SWB 230GE for sale very soon apparently...

Do show and tell...Im pretty sure we have had a couple others here with them too.
The one getting the ute conversion is a new aquisition to the G-Family though!
Gwagensteve for one - his name sort of gives it awayRUFF wrote: Im pretty sure we have had a couple others here with them too.
I have a mate over here with a Gwagen. They are not bad but there are a lot of parts of the design that could have been done better. Semi-floating rear axles with radius arms (too much antisquat), and I think a semi-floating front axle too (or at least an overly complex front axle design).

GEE !!!
For some reason I associated tonka with a hilux. Man those cars are cool. That BLING black one in the Bourne Identity was cool.
Strength wise how do those locked diffs hold up ? How are they actuated ?
Can you point me in the direction of any G wagon websites..
Anywayz this really aint tech so I will shut up.

Lockers are hydraulically actuated, but AFAIK apart from that is a similar design to the Land Rover maxi-drive (can find pics of this).
Diffs seem to be reasonably strong - probably about the same strength as a Dana 44. My mate has broken the locker mechanism on his rear locker.

Tonka, Andrew Cassar did the dual cab conversion on Alberto Pamintuan's GU Patrol. Check out the link on http://www.ontrack4x4.net.au/GUDualCab.htm

I know Sandy is still going, the work is fully engineered and neat. For the number of ute chops he has done - i've never seen one have issues.
You planning on a cage as well at the same time? Always a good option.
9729 4899 and tick that shit up!
