TB 42 Stroker
TB 42 Stroker
Someone was asking about these a while back but has anyone come across the company in Adelaide that did a crank for stroking a TB 42. I was told it was out to 6 litre. I need more power and this sounds like the go.
I have heard of a cheaper way to get to 4.5L by installing the head off the TB45 onto the TB42 engine, replace the Distributor with the EFI driven TB42E and using the EFI off the TB45. Dunno how sucessfull this was but apparently the TB45 adn TB42 are the same block only different head unit.
AA's for Quitters
How would that increase the engine capacity? Since the capacity is Bore x Stroke, neither of which you change when swapping heads.MyGQ wrote:I have heard of a cheaper way to get to 4.5L by installing the head off the TB45 onto the TB42 engine, replace the Distributor with the EFI driven TB42E and using the EFI off the TB45. Nice as this would be, I don't think it's right. My understanding is that the TB45E is a TB42 with an extra 3.5mm of bore ie 99.5mm bore, 96mm stroke for the 4.5 instead of 96x96 for the 4.2.MyGQ wrote:I have heard of a cheaper way to get to 4.5L by installing the head off the TB45 onto the TB42 engine, replace the Distributor with the EFI driven TB42E and using the EFI off the TB45. There might be differences in the head as well but I don't think they'd get you to 4.5 litres.
However, I would be happy if I turned out to be wrong.

Re: TB 42 Stroker
Be cheaper to pick up a second hand 4.5 motor, 6 litres prety optimistic, if it could be done that easily Nissan would have done it.AndrewT wrote:Someone was asking about these a while back but has anyone come across the company in Adelaide that did a crank for stroking a TB 42. Re: TB 42 Stroker
I agree... considering that Nissan bored out the 4.2 to make it 4.5, then stroked the 4.5 to make it 4.8, I doubt that it would be easy to get 6 litres just by swapping the crank. You would need a stroke of almost 140mm with a bore of just 96mm. And even if you could do it would have breathing problems with a motor that undersquare and with only two valves per cylinder.Rainbow Warrior wrote:Be cheaper to pick up a second hand 4.5 motor, 6 litres prety optimistic, if it could be done that easily Nissan would have done it.AndrewT wrote:Someone was asking about these a while back but has anyone come across the company in Adelaide that did a crank for stroking a TB 42. Anyone know the bore & stroke of the motors concerned and if the 4.8 crank bolts straight in to a TB42 or TB45 pistons
& liners could be used in a TB42
I was under the impression there are some major differences in the 4.8 block

Check these figures before you rely on them, but I think it goes:
TB42: bore 96mm, stroke 96mm
TB45: bore 99.5mm, stroke 96mm
TB48: bore 99.5mm, stroke 102mm
The 4.8 is a revamp but not a totally new animal, with a double overhead cam, 24 valves, and variable valve timing instead of the 12-valve pushrod arrangement of the 4.5 and 4.2.
So presumably there are changes in the block as well as the head for the 4.8 vs the 4.5, but it's still basically the same hunk of metal.
All this could be wrong; I've never opened any of these motors up.

Re: TB 42 Stroker
wouldnt you be better off going with a 350 chev/VH45 or similar, and then not having any issues with reliability, luscious fuel economy that you would get from a 6ltr petrol, etc?AndrewT wrote:Someone was asking about these a while back but has anyone come across the company in Adelaide that did a crank for stroking a TB 42. Yeah and if anyone has info on a 900thou bore & piston kit please let us know tooAndrewT wrote:So back to my original question, if anyone has heard of this conversion can they let me know
cheers Andrew
