Chassing some info on the big MQ rear diff.
How wide is it WMS-WMS
What ratios are available stock and Aftermarket?
How many spline are the axles? I beleive 37spline?
Are they full or semi float?
What breaks in these. I know the smaller MQ diffs break axles and in a bad way. They never seam to twist off they just shatter at the splines. Is this a fault the 37 spline axles also suffer from?

Big MQ rear diff? How Wide and Strong?
Tony,
Back of the drum brake to back of the drum brake measures 1360mm.
they are available in 3.9 ( rare in P40s ), 4.1, 4.3. 4.625 and 4.8
Most diesels and L28 petrols are 4.625s but are for the smaller rear diff.
the larger rear diff were 4.625 and 4.8.
the larger rear diffs have 37 spline and the smaller rear diffs are 31 spline.
no after market ratios available.
Semi-float.... i believe would be the definatition
if u call 40 and 60 series landcruiser rears full floater ( i.e you can take the rear axle out of the middle without taking wheel off etc )....
then MQ rears are semi, just take wheel off and 6 nuts on the back of the axle to housing and it comes out the middle, brakes can stay on.
Rear brakes are a single slave cylender drum brake.
i shiered a rear axle in my MQ last week.... It shiered and twisted off at the spline. it didnt explode.... just movement cause bearing carrier damage.....
the big rear axles im not so sure...... Mick Christie will know the answer the the strength of these
This enough info for ya Tony??

they are 37 spline - 38.4mm. i have only ever heard of one breaking a shaft, and it was in a suspect housing (bent). never heard of anyone breaking anything in the differential itself. you can still get an airlocker for them. you can do a disc conversion pretty easy using GQ rear rotors. they are roughly 5" narrower than GQ stuff. so about 58".
diff
mine is in a gu leafy it measures 1540mm drum-drum, never broken anything but have bent a pinion, i can also pull the axles out while the wheels stay on, does that mean its full floating? with 4.3 ratios, what does wms meen?

No info at all for you on the nissan diffs
But....if you are looking for a big cheap rear diff then look no further than the corporate 14 bolt.
Gear strength - 10.5" ring gear
1.750" 30 spline pinion
huge 2 piece carrier made of 8620 Heat treated alloy steel
extra pinion bearing support
Shaft strength - 1.5' 30 spline full floating shafts
Housing strength - massive cast iron center section
3.25: x 0.5" tubes
Comes in two widths - 63" and 67" wms-wms, easily converted from one to the other (shafts are common)
Removable pinion support, unbolts from the rest of housing, makes for easier gear setup
Diff housing has built-in threaded carrier pre-load adjusters, makes for easier gear setup
Because the carrier is so large and strong, a "full" detroit locker fits in the stock housing, and is therefore easy to install without gear setup changes, and is much cheaper than other 1 ton FF lockers
Pinion yokes commonly available for 1310 to 1410 series u-joints
Fairly commonly came stock with 4.10 and 4.56 gears and Detroit Lockers
Easy to convert to disc brakes
Easy to "shave" for 2" inch gain in clearance
Pinion length shorter than other 1 ton ff rear axles (D60, D70), for improved driveshaft length and angles
Large ID spindles
And if you look hard enough you can find them in Aus.
For example a guy I know was selling two complete rears for $500 as he just wanted to get rid of them.
Or there is always Shanes high pinion 35 spline Dana60's
I will be quiet now
