have you ever been in a SWB, they are short........ up steep inclines they are scary, ask matsmad about that........ i personally prefer long wheelbase for that reason, but if you dont mind driving with your heart in your mouth, there awesome  i dont know anything specific about the mavericks though. but have a look at the import patrols too if you want power everything

My friend has a GQ Maverick LWB with 6"lift and 35's, i will ask him if he knows diff between Patrol GQ tonight. But from what i have seen his goes great offroad, and there's alot that you can do with em. LWB has alot of room for custom storage stuff. I have been wheeling with him about a year now and he's only been stuck once. But, as was already said, LWB will be alot more stable, but SWB will be able to sneak around sum obstackles that others have to go over. Just comes down to choice and personal cuircumstances. My friend chose LWB so if he ever has kids he wont havat sell it. Good planning IMO :D

Perhaps move this to the Nissan thread mods?

Badges are the difference, maverick is a patrol rebadged to a ford. Some of the top of the line models weren't available as Mavericks was about the only diff as far as I know.....and thats not saying much!
The drive train and all the rest of the car is the same to a patrol.

Go LWB
You run in to vibration probs when you lift a SWB and they are scarey going up a steep hill. I have seen Mavdog run into the bush with a roll of paper a few times. They are a pain with passengers and gear. Make sure you allow for the fuel bill.

They can be identical or they can be slightly different in specs.

Mavs only come with the 4.2 litre motors, some GQs come with the 2.8 or 3.0 litre motors which are definitely not desirable.

The lowest spec GQ has no carpet, sometimes has a front bench seat, is missing some gauges, and sometimes has the front quarter windows. I think they are also sometimes missing vacuum assistance on the clutch, not 100% on that but look out for it. You may or may not mind missing out on that stuff.

Also watch out for GQs that have rear drum brakes, apparently they exist although I've never seen one. 4 discs is obviously preferable by far.

Both GQs and Mavs can come with or without power options ie windows, aerial, central locking, sunroof, and with or without a factory rear locker, which is a vacuum actuated type and not too bad. Some or all of these may matter to you. Also some LWBs are seven seaters, some are five seaters.

Other than those "option" type differences, they are exactly the same car with different badges.

There's quite a bit on this in the Nissan section.

They are identical. Its only the badges that are different. The mav's do tend to be a tiny bit cheaper for some reason though.

I have a LWB diesel Mav and cant fault it - its a fantastic car!

mav vs patrol

Post by CHILLI 2 »

I agree with rod and cossie although there could be slight variations between both!my brother has a swb maverick and my brother in law has a lwb patrol and there almost the same except for lenght in fact when you lift the bonnet on the mav it's got nissan stamped everywhere.

BTW I would say that your decision about SWB vs LWB is not really about off-road capability (because both have pros and cons), it's about your more general needs. If you need to carry a lot of gear, have more than one passenger very often, or plan to do touring, you will probably need an LWB.

If you don't need those things, the SWBs are definitely a lot quicker thanks to their lower weight - you really notice the difference - and probably a bit more economical as well, plus they are a lot easier to park; the LWBs are really a bitch in car parks. SWBs also look heaps cooler than the LWBs.

Yes, Mavs and GQs are the same thing, but be aware of the spec differences when shopping around so you know what to ask about; it sucks when you get all excited about a cheap-ish Patrol in the paper then discover it's got the 3 litre donk in it and you got excited and drove over to have a look for nothing...

Sorry to highjack the thread....

Im tossing up between a SWB and a LWB Nissan/Mav.

I dont carry much at all maybe a swag a fridge when going camping and what ever doestnt fit goes on the back of mates utes, so space isnt a real issue with me. Its more the offroad capabilities im after.
I live in NE Vic in Wodonga, so there is a few hills and not many rocks mostly muddy places/hills.

which would be a better option and why? if u can comment on which one is more comfortable in the bush as well that would be good too

The LWB is probably a little bit more comfortable due to the extra weight and the extra space could be useful if it's more than just you and a mate/you and the missus.

However the SWB is way quicker and is cheaper to run.

Offroad each has it's advantages. LWB better for steep climbs but then more likely to get stuck at the top due to rampover angle.

They can be a bit too big to manouver and you may find the length an issue trying to squeeze down trails between trees and rocks.

Generally you'll go out and find the LWB will get stuck at different points than the SWB, but they'll both fail to drive through about as often. But excluding really steep climbs the SWB is more capable no question.

As an example last time I went out I was doing some stuff first run lockless that an LSD'd LWB couldnt do on repeated runs.

LWB are also easier to lift - but dont believe the hype about huge lifted GQ's/Mavs with no other mods.

Plenty of people have issues if they lift a shorty over 2" and LWB the safe level is 3". Sometimes you can get away with more, but dont rely on it and it can cost a fair bit to correct depending on what the problems are.

Being a QLDer then you may wish to consider the hassles of legality for much greater lift. 2+2" (body and suspension) is as big as is normally legal. Given that even 33"s are pushing the legality quotient this may or may not matter anyway.

LWB are far more likely to be 3.0 (or 2.8 Diesels) than Shorties. Shorties are generally higher spec.

Either way they're a good beast and ultra tough. If you wanna see a bashed around one offroad I can let you know next time I go out - it'll probably be with a couple other patrols.

the patrol has chrome door handles and the mav has black anadised door handles, why would they bother

Also a larger number of the Mavs came out with 3.9 diff gears as opposed to the std 4.1's in the patrols (this is relating to the 4.2lt motors).
But other than that it is trim level. So just look for one with trim you like.

As for the price difference. I think it might be a perceived thing. Cos Nissan still make Patrols but there hasnt been a Ford badged mav since about 94 or something like that. Also people might make a query to ford about parts and they dont stock any. But they dont need to as Nissan have everything.
Its the same with the Jap import GQ's. They are pretty much the same as the AUS delivered stuff except for the 24v electrics. Not like the surfs etc which are all over the place when it comes to parts.

Nah it doesnt work that way..

It comes down to te wheel pack... if it had the 16x6 rims it's more likely to be 3.9 diffs and if it had the factory 15x7 wide wheel pack more likely to be 4.1.

Thats not an absolute rule but it basically suggests more mavs are 4.1's. Mine certainly is.

The Rb 30 lump is not that bad. You can pick up another motor easy for $300 there not that much slower and use a lot less fuel.

Out of shear random interest. I have 2 uncles one works at a ford stealership and the other at a nissan stealership (good prices for me anyway). The only Maverick thing you can now purchase from the ford dealership is the badge.

As has been said TRIM is the only factor, along with the engines. Interestingly the XLT mavs only come in the 4.2 petrol you will find the XL has both petrol and diesel.

My yellow DX shorty had no vaccuum assist on clutch (doesn't bother me) and drum brakes in the rear. It had factory air conditioning, not aftermarket which I found odd considering it was a pov pack.

I personally don't think you can beat a shorty turning circle of around 5 meters makes them very nimble both in the bush and suburbia. If you are having trouble finding a diesel variant look at the imported safari patrol. These vehicles have 24volt electrics the only downside. Most have A1 ++ trim and options ie; pto winch, rear locker, sunroof, headlight wipers ??, rear heaters etc etc. You do have to look for insurance though NRMA won't touch them. Basically they are no different to ozzie patrols albeit the 24volt electrics..

I could go on and on...

Mine is a weird one, 16x6 rims with 29s, but 4.1 diffs. It screams on the freeway.
