I was just wondering if there is a place in Brisbane such as a lifting supplies place or the like that would sell rope suitable for winching?
Keeping in mind that I barely use the winch and my main aim is reducing the weight on the front end of my ute and don't want to pay top $$$ for comp stuff.
I currently have an Ox hydraulic and ARB winch bar. Since I have removed the bar and winch for my body lift I have weighed the parts seperately. The bar weighs abut 45kg and the winch 33kg. The winch has 27m of 10mm wire rope. Looking at having a tube bar to try and further reduce weight.
Maybe I'll just forget the power winch and pick up a hand winch
Its expenisive and is easily damaged. Not worth it for a weekend basher. Unless you are in comps or u have very deep pockets, i personally dnt reccomend it.
I have a Rockstomper rope and love it, or should I say my winch bitch does.
Search harder and you will see a thread about wire vs. rope. Rope is lighter, a little more expensive and needs TLC but for me rope wins as it won't kill anyone if it breaks.

it isnt that expensive really and if you look after it it will last well.
How much is that leg........or head worth to you

Well I have searched further on the net and found I would also be up for a new fairlead. I have a roller type fairlead atm.
It should be easy enough to remove the synthetic rope when I know I won't be using it for a while and store it away to protect it from the elements. Much easier than removing wire rope. Plus as the SR doesn't weigh much, removing it wouldn't upset my IFS wheel alignment.
Anyone know what 27m of 10mm wire rope weighs? Would be good to know how much weight I'd actually be saving (without having to remove the cable myself).
What would make it incompatible? I saw a chart to show the suitable synthetic rope replacements for various winches and the Ox was listed. I think it was on the Rockstomper site.
Just rang a few winching/lifting supplies places but the people I need to speak with are out of the office. I guess that means they have gone home til Monday
They might have changed, but isn't the Ox/mile Marker a planetary? Usual problems with heat through the brake, cable acting as an insulator instead of a heat sink with wire cable etc

Heat through the brake is only a problem when you are powering out not in. You don't normally power out often.

I don't know what that means in regards to your heat generation question though. Probably means SFA for the use it will get from me though.
This is a hydraulic winch though. I am preeeety sure that it doesn't have a brake as such. It relies on hydraulic pressure to hold you on a hill.
Warn low mount winches have planetary reduction gears and a brake inside the winch drum.
The planetary gears do not have anything what so ever to do with heat problems affecting synthetic rope.
It is the way the Warn brake works inside the winch drum that is the problem. When the a Warn low mount winch is powered out (eg to lower the vehicle or instead of using free spool), the brake is applied and the motor is driving the drum against the brake, which generates heat in the drum spool. This heat (from the brake) is what affects the synthetic rope.
If the winch is only powered out for a short distance and there is sufficient time for the heat to be dissipated away from the drum and rope, the rope will likely not be affected.
I have partly dis-assembled (and re-assembled) an Ox/Mile Marker hydraulic winch and it did not have a brake inside the drum. So there will not be a problem with using synthetic rope.
With hydraulic winches, it is easy to achieve satisfactory braking using the hydraulic motor and valves (which is what the OX/Mile Marker winches have).
Ox/Mile Marker electric winches are different. They will have to have some kind of mechanical brake. I have dis-assembled and re-assemble Warn winches (low and high mount), but I have not touched any of the other electric low mount winches.
AFAIK the OX/Mile Marker electric winches are manufactured in China and rebadged for OX/Mile Marker. Like the other low mount winches from China, they resemble the Warn low mount and I would expect to find a similar brake inside the winch drum, and the same problems with synthetic rope.
I've powered out once or twice when it was difficult for the winch jockey to pull on the winch cable and still manage to walk up the slippery/loose hill.

I can remember reading up somewhere on the net that a marine type company was selling the stuff cheap as. They said it was suitable for 4x4 winching etc. etc. and it looked like the synthetic stuff i've seen at 4x4 shops etc.
