35's on a NH SWB

Post by Miyagi »

i'm planning on fitting some 35's soon and was after a bit of input. with the lift i've already got they will fit no probs in the rear and i only need to cut a bit off the front inner guard and bar to fit. (learnt this on a ramp test the other week :) )

what i was looking for was how will they affect the drive, i'm aware that they wont help the "awesome" ;) low range im blessed with but will they make much difference on the black top, will fuel ecconomy suffer and how much more will my spedo be put out (i think its allready 10% out).

cheers

Yeah 35"s should fit ok.
I had 34" JT2's (measure out to 34.6x11.9") on 15x8" ROH Trac 2 rims and had no rubbing on the rear and only scrubbing on the front if the car hit a hole too hard (with a bit of lock).
I had a 2" body lift and 2.5" suspension lift.
With a 3.0 V6 & 5sp (yours will have 4.88 diffs) you will notice the lack of power especially up hills but being a swb and 200Kg lighter you maybe ok with it. Mine being a lwb was a pain and I was going to go to 5.29's anyway (even if I didn't do the SAS).
Now with 5.29's it helps but is still no substitute for power the 3.0 V6 doesn't have much low down torque which is the problem.
Having 2.85 t/case gears with 5.29 diffs low range is great.
Your economy will go out the window and if offroading hard you will regularly bust IFS stuff (bend idler arms, break tie rods, bend steering arms etc). Your speedo will be out quite a bit but you can get other Mitsu speedo cable gears to compensate http://www.mitsu4wdclubqld.org/tips/tech/tech9611.htm
I didn't break anything with 33"s but certainly did with the 35"s.
The extra clearance is awesome just what a IFS Paj needs but there are side effects and it really depends on what you want to do with your rig and how much $$ you want to spend.
I was at the end of the road with mine with the IFS couldn't really run any bigger tyres and the IFS was starting to suffer big time and required a total overhaul or replacement (SAS).

I ran 35" claws on my NL shorty for a few months. I opted to go back to 33's purely because the gearing was fawked. Even with 4.9's, I was always down changing up hills but worst off all was the downhill performnace offroad.

Telling you from experience, I am not a fan of 35's. Clearance was no issue but drivability was lost.

I am sure I bitched about it many times on this forum about 12 months ago.

My 2c anyway.
