The pics are from a thread on 4WD Monthly and the GQ was a vehicle spotted at a comp. i would omagine tho, that the bend would go into the guard then pipe going to another bend to bring it out in the right spot.

On the shorty in your pics it goes straight into a aftermarket air box.
How you will need to do yours depends on your application. If you are running the std air box then you will need to extend the line thought the inner guard to attatch some flex pipe running to your air box.

Most turbo engines seem to run better with the intake facing backwards.GUJohnno wrote:Is a filter needed on these or can you just have the end facing rearwards..?
There is no reason why you could not put a ram head on like with brand name snorkles

You don't need to run a filter on the top. You can run a Donaldson Pre-cleaner, straight open pipe, or something like an off the shelf snorkel head. I got a price for a safari-type head with 3" outlet - $25! I like the idea of not sucking up small animals, tufts of grass & mud etc.
They reckon spinning the head around in dusty conditions helps, same with bog-holes and water etc. I was originally going to get a heap of mandrel bent 3" sections, and use silicone/rubber joiners. Then i thought about welding them.....but it all gets too hard.

I wonder if there's enough airflow with 3" tubing if you've had a V8 conversion done? Just think what a 4" diameter one would look like Hmmmmmm. Apparently there's a company up near bayswater making 4" mandrel bends for truck exhausts.

if I remember correctly, Kyle went 4inch on the VH45 Ptrool.. looked sweet, but I think it would be easy to damage....awill4x4 wrote:I wonder if there's enough airflow with 3" tubing if you've had a V8 conversion done? The problem with a 4" one might be visability

hmmm....thats a point, well i chose to go with 3", its only going on a TB42, it should flow more than enough, if need be in a million years when i can afford a V8 conversion, ill put twin staino snorkels on,GUJohnno wrote:....why?bogged wrote:if I remember correctly, Kyle went 4inch on the VH45 Ptrool.. looked sweet, but I think it would be easy to damage....

The black GQ SWB tray is my mate Marty's and we made that snorkel with 4 inch stainless pipe (you need about 2 mts), 2x 4inch rubber 45 degree bends, 1X 4inch rubber 90degree bend and 5 no.110 s/s hose clamps. He is running a donaldson truck air filter with a 4 inch inlet. It is an easy job and I have also made one for my rig as well and i'm running the std GQ EFI air box.
i have some s/steel pipe in 4" if anyone wants some. enough for 2 snorkels.
s/steel bends both 90, and 45 degree can be bought from midway metals in yatla (queensland). they are around $40 a bend from memory.
s/seel is fine except when you roll it can crush your a pillar, windscreen etc as it is very hard to crush in the std 1.6mm wall thickness. Aluminimum is better as well as being lighter. both s/steel and ally can be joined with truck rubber bends which are also around the $40 mark. then it is easy to replace crushed tube with a peice of new, after a roll or scrub with the rubber bends and hose clamps.
4" flows nearly double 3", and i would never run dual snorkels as they get in the way as well as doulbling the risk of water entry, preheating the air as it crosses over the motor, being harder to intergrate into an airbox in a water tight manner also. a polished s/steel or ally snorkel in 4" would be a reflective nightmare in the sun.
cheers bru

My local truck joint quoted me around $125 for a complete 3" setup. Thats from the scoop head, with all steel tubing, clamps, and rubber joins. I think they could only get 3" bent sections in 45 & 90 degree bends (with small and large radius bends), or as a 3" doughnut.
How big does the hole have to be in the guard for a 3" pipe (ie. does it have to be stretched to an oval shape to allow for the inside bent section)?
And what do you guys use to mount them up onto the A-pillar?
Cheers - Coxy

Hilux
Looking at doing this for sure. About $115 all up. Have a few questions though.
I am wanting to have the pipe angle of about 20 degrees from outside to run inside straight to the air filter box; to reduce to right angle which cause flow restriction. Is there an S bend with less than 90 degree angles to do this; so i don't have 3 foot of gaurd chopped out?
Is there a bigger filter box that will fit into the hilux 2.8 diesel? Because the inlet will now come from behind not run next to the box; it will allow about 8cm extra for a bigger one Anyone done this type of thing?
Anyone using the Unifilter "Droopie" bit of feedback on these would be appreciated

How do you fit the pip that runs up the pillar to the piller?
I have a 96 Hilux and was going to do this in one length of 80mm aluminium pipe and have it running down the pillar straight into the guard behind the ariel then run the flex pip under the guard into the engine bay so there is less chance of hitting it..
anyone see any problems?

WXC of the board was running a 3" and he said the TB42 had troubles breathing. now he's running a 4" on and he reckons it much better.ozy1 wrote:hmmm....thats a point, well i chose to go with 3", its only going on a TB42, it should flow more than enough, if need be in a million years when i can afford a V8 conversion, ill put twin staino snorkels on,GUJohnno wrote:....why?bogged wrote:if I remember correctly, Kyle went 4inch on the VH45 Ptrool.. looked sweet, but I think it would be easy to damage....
