auto locking hubs problem
auto locking hubs problem
I get this horrible clicking sound from one of my auto hubs when they are trying to engage/disengage automatically. Manually locking them seems to be ok, but then I have to reverse to get them to unlock.
Do you think they need overhauling or should I just swap them out for manual hubs?

Fromt he setup its just s simple swap out.
Undo about 6-8 bolts (or allan Key style on some) remove the old auto hubs and then install the new ones
The cam unit can stay inside from memory as there is nothing for the cam to grip on now you swapped them for manual hubs
I am running the factor fitted ones, they are fine, if you are relying on auto ones then you are asking for trouble. if you get out and lock them in every time you go 4x4ing, whats the point in having them

Thanks mate, yeah I do lock the auto hubs manually if I'm trying anything hard...........if I'm just on a gravel track then I don't bother, but then I get that horrible noise and last time I just put it back in 2wd and carried on as I couldn't be bothered to mess about.
So, yeah...........I'll get some manual ones I can trust..........I'll pick up those AVM ones from ARB and fit them myself..........hopefully next week.

I unbolted the auto hubs today.......but the clutch mechanism or cam unit or whatever u call it needs to come off as the manual hub will not fit over it.
How do I get this off? The cam/clutch whatever can move a bit and that is what engages the hubs I presume once the axle is driving, but it's held in place by another ring, hard to describe. Anyone tell me how to get this off so I can fit the manual hub please?

if you bend it.. nissan sell em for 12 dollars each.
Thanx muchley, I borrowed some circlip pliers from a mate and the job was easy
I'm not impressed with the quality of the AVM hubs though.......they feel very plasticy.........I'm tempted to take them back to ARB and get something else, but I don't know if I can be bothered.

Surprisingly i am running the standard hubs that come with the Nissan Patrols and Ford Mavericks, they must be good, as the Cab Chassis Patrol still uses them to this day. If youy can get your hands on some Nissan ones I would, as i don't think too many people here have killed them, but in my travels around the forum i have heard of the AVM ones bitting the bullet.
Maybe a set of Warn ones might be the go.
