where do i find info on front and rear gear ratios cus with my 22r and toyota tranny and stock daihatsu difs i go 37mph at 55mph on speedo and at 75mph i'm under 55mph and revs are around 3000rpm in fifth gear! Any ideas would be great! May have to use it stricktly as a offroad toy!

What size tyres are you running? The Daihatsu differentials are 5.29:1. You probably have a G52 Toy transmission. First gear is 3.93:1, second gear is 2.33:1, third gear is 1.45:1, fourth gear is 1:1, fifth gear is .83:1.

I have 5.71:1 in the differentials and a W56 Toy transmission. The gear ratios are close to the G52. With 35" tyres my speedometer is off by about 7 mph.

I would think that if you put 35's on with the stock 5.29 Daihatsu diffs that would put your speedo at around stock...just go easy on the gas pedal. Or you can put your donor truck axles (probably 4.10:1) under the Daihatsu. You won't find ANY after market ring and pinion gears for the Feroza/ US Rocky.

running stock tires for now got 31-10.50s on my explorer thinking it might bring the revs down alittle and bring speedo with in half of what it should be! Um i dont know what tranny i got but its the one with the cast iron bell!
well going to finnaly take the rocky to play tomarrow and hope to get some good mud pics suposed to rain tonight! lol should be fun! ttyl hope u get the pics ! going to send them in a few got to down load to yahoo to send them email style! LOL :armsup:

That tranny would be:

1981-1982, L45, 4 Speed

1981-1982, L50, 5 Speed

1983, L52, 5 Speed

The L series are a shorter transmission than the G or W series. I probably should have used this tranny on my swap but the W's are much stronger. The L series has a 3.93 first, 2.33 second, 1.45 third, 1 fourth and if you have the five speed model .85 fifth.

looks like the l-50 to me! thanks for the update! going to put my 31s on the rocky next week or two and try that for now dont have the $ for new 35s yet lol bearly had the money for the 31s had to sell a car to do it lol

I hope you guys don't mind me asking in here but I've been looking for a rebuilt engine or another alternative.
Do I understand that you have a Toyota engine and tranny in your Rocky? I've asked around and no one can help me with this.
If you have time, could you tell me all that's involved in that kind of swap?

Doug,

Engine mounts, cross member mounts, drive shaft modifications, wiring, modify transmission tunnel, clutch...I think that covers the basics.

batshiz went with a 22R which is a carburator model as he wanted it for a mud truck. The 22RE is the fuel injected model which most people would need for emissions testing as a DD. I went with a 3RZ-fe which was much more work as the intake and exhaust are on the wrong sides. The 22RE is a 2.4L which is a big increase in power from the 1.6L. The 3RZ is a 2.7L made from 1995.5 - 2005. There is the V-6 option also but don't look at the 3.0L as they have head gasket problems...3.4L is the best. My reasoning was that I wanted to keep the truck and wanted drive train parts made in the US.

I am sure that there are a lot of other options besides Toyota. I didn't research any others as the Toy parts are everywhere and are cheap.

It is a lot of work but worth it in the end. Most people would just sell it and buy something else. If you are seriously thinking of a 22RE swap I am sure that batshiz and myself could help you.

Thanks for the info.
I'm pretty serious about doing it but I'm finding that the local mechanics aren't taking me too seriously. I can't do it myself because of rules where I live and lack of that much mechanical knowledge.
Most of the guys I've talked to say that I could buy a new Rocky for the price it would take to do it. Or that it wouldn't pass California emissions for the rest of the life of the car and other excusses.
I'll probably end up just replacing it with the same engine unless I can find someone who is willing to take on the challenge.

Don't know what your emissions laws are over there, but I know it wouldn't pass here. The engine appears to be an older carby design than the original Feroza HD-E; so no doubt the emissions would be a lot worse.

In Colorado you have to use the same year engine or newer. I had to go to the state emissions board and get a "change of engine verification". When I go back for an emissions test the state computer lists my Rocky as having a 2.7L Toyota engine. The 3RZ had MUCH lower emissions than the stock engine. The 22RE was made till 1995.5 so that would work in your 1991-92 US Rocky. People in California do engine swaps all the time. You probably have similar laws as Colorado.

well there is no laws here yet but they do want a exaust system on it past the rear axle other than that they say it cant be shutting out smoke but thats about it no inspections just by the state patrol if u get stoped and the check tires and exaust thats all! But i know cali is way strickt on that shit!
