A long, not very interesting nissan story?

Post by BOB_1 »

Ok, I had a 91 Mav for about the last 6 years, had a locker, custom bars and high mount, 6inch suspension and lots of other bits and pieces, about 230000 on the clock. Only problem was I was driving about 2500ks a month and it was the 4.2 petrol. I couldn't be stuffed with putting it on gas and a guy from work was interested in buying it, so I took the high mount of it and sold it to him. It was a bit rough and had done a little time at Toolangi, Wesburn and Gembrook.

Ever since I have been looking for a really good GQ diesel - Ive looked for a couple of months ( I live in Corryong 435kms NE of Melbourne) so every time I was in melbourne, through the trading post and off I would go. I was looking at between 10 and 12 for the GQ and most had over 300000 ks on them anyway, My Girlfriend and I were getting really sick of looking at all of the cars and I had to go down again this weekend for a bucks night. I finished a bit early on Friday and on the way down, went to Broadford car sales as I was going past and they had some cheap GUs. Anyway I looked, drove and bought one on the spot.

It is a 99 GU 4.2 Diesel Wagon - ex telstra.
It has 258000 ks on it.
It has a standard bullbar with 9000 lowmount,
Telstra back step with the cool tow ball and pintle hitch,
A smallish dent in the roof where something fell of the roof rack,
The doors and sides are remarkebly straight,
There are a couple of hail dents in the bonnet.
Telstra 50mm suspension with docket from ARB showing what was fitted.
The back behind the cargo barrier is a bit rough.
The front is really clean except for the 15 screw holes in the dash.
An NRMA report with the only problems being a couple of worn bushes and the rear number plate light globe blown.
It has a full service history from nissan from new, right up to 266000 ks,
Doesn't blow smoke and sounds the same as my mates 7000k old GU ute

It doesn't seem to have any of the problems and I just drove it back to Corryong - almost 450 ks, It drives really well.

The question I have is what is done up to 250000ks with services - ie timing chain, injectors, etc, or would they only be done when needed, From the broken paint on the injector pump, I would say it has been adjusted.

What do you think, will it get me Fraser Island next month?

It will easily get you to Fraser. TD42 when serviced properly will easily go past 600,000KM's I rebuilt my TD42@550,000 and it would easily have done another 100,000. At 258,000, engine will still have plenty of life left. Engine dosent have a timing chain--injection pump/camshaft are gear driven.

Sounds like a top buy. As for getting you to fraser next month, if you do get there keep an eye out for a burgundy over gold GQ LWB. Heading up from Melbourne 17 Th Sept first night on fraser ment to be Sept 19.
2005 TD 100 series GXl wagon . Stock except bar and tyres . Plan on doing lots of touring in this one.

Hi Bob

I've been looking at those ex telstra GU's that Broadford get in myself but none of them are the turbos. I seen the one you just purchased and, again, no turbo otherwise it may have been mine and not yours. Did your's have any of the back seats in it as many have been removed and they have put the cargo barrier right behind the front seats.

Mate of mine picked a GU up recently that was an ex mine one, 2003 model turbo diesel 4.2 for $18,000 with only 103,000 kms on it. Probably all done in low range i guess but it wasn' an underground mine vehicle so was in better condition than I thought.

The engine and driveline are good for 500,000 kms easily enough if looked after so you should have no problems with it at all. You will drive past us on your way to Fraser as we are on the Sunshine Coast. Give us a wave as you go past.

Cheers

It looks like the cargo barrier has been behind the back seats it's whole life, The back seat area is really clean, It just had it's roadworthy, One pedal rubber, a number plate globe and a swaybar dropper thingy brocken balljoint- the guy doing it said, - I think theres one of them lying around and pulled one out of a box of stuff. So it's all good - I went to look at the one without the back seat last week, sold an hour before I got there, but was nowhere near as clean as this one.
Now to get it to Wodonga to register it.
