Hi-pinion Landcruiser Centres
Hey everone,
What's the deal with the landcruiser high pinion diff centre? Does it bolt straight into a hilux axle housing, what ratios is it commonly available in, do they cost heaps, how strong are they, is the pinion flange the same as a hilux, can I use my existing driveshafts, are they easily available, will I be waisting my time?
Any help needed!

Yes I know something about this when I got the Detroit fitted.
All 80 & 100 Series constant 4x4 have high pinion front diffs with a reverse helix gear cut. This is done for strength, extra ground clearance and can correct driveline angles.
F100's have had front high pinions for years now also.
The diff dude told me the Cruiser front centre bolts straight into the Lux carrier (front and rear). He was surprised to see my Jabber front diff is a high pinion design and started telling me about the Toyo stuff.

Yes thats correct!
The High pinion is designed to run mainly in the one direction!
The fact that it can go in the rear diff of a hilux means it runs on the NON Drive side of the gears, meaning that it will be weaker!
In the front (where they are designed to run) are heaps stronger than the stock hilux ones!
I had a 4.88 bundy high-pinion and busted it (took heaps more than a stock centre would have) and now i have a 4.3 high pinion!
That was what I thought regarding running on the coast side being weaker so therefore stronger than stock in the front diff. What about lockers? Can the same locker fit both high pinion and low pinion diff centres? How much are the centres worth?

Diff gears are stronger when the drive is against one particular side of the teeth (the convex side from memory). Generally they are cut to suit rear diffs.
When gears for a rear diff are used in the front the drive is on the weak side of the teeth. And the pinion is pulled inward, instead of thrust against it's larger bearing. Usually the load on the front diff gears is lower than for the rear so this is acceptable in many cases.
Reverse cutting the gears for the front solves the strong/weak side issues, but the pinion has to be above centre because the direction of rotation is reversed - so called high pinion.
With 80 and 100 series cruisers, they put a smaller diff in the front (9.5" rear vs 8" front) but used reverse cut gears (high pinion).
AFAIK 80 series diesels are 4.11:1 and 100 series diesels are 4.3:1.
Edit ratio for 80 series - was incorrect due to brain fade.

With the air locks a RD23 will fit both high pinion and standard hilux centres, just bearings are different.
A RD01 is also a hilux air lock, I`m about 99% that they to will fit both. I will be finding out about this soon as I have a broken RD01 that I am getting fixed soon and it will be going into the front of my 80.
I don`t think desiel 80`s are 4.88 geared. they are either 4.11 or 4.3, I myself am more certain they are 4.11 like most cruisers are.

I was of the belief two studs do not line up.
This is only on a factory electric locker and you also need to notch the housing for the solinoid.
With regards to strength.....
Obviously hipinion is heaps stronger in front application.
In the back however would the adoption of say 4.1 gears offset the drop in strength when compared to a 4.88 low pinion? Or maybe 5.29 low pinion?

I beleive CPlux is currently running 4.88high pinions front and rear. Im not sure how they are coping with this or how long they have been fitted but i do know that AllPro in the US tried repetedly to run a high pinion in the rear with poor results. No matter how they set the gears up they did not last.
The hi pinions are very week running on the coast side of the gears.
Two broke last week (100 series and a 2001 cruiser trayback) all they were doing was reversing up a hill a Kingswood could have driven up
The ARB locker from the rear of a 88 on Hilux will fit the cruiser hi pinion center.
Just remember a Hilux center in the front when you reverse is driving on the correct side of the gears.

Well if they can't get it right then I haven't got much chance!
Might start looking for a 4.88 hipinion front.
Found today that I've broken the welds on my cig locked 4.88 centre.

NO! I didn't weld it. I paid $80 bucks to have it welded at a diff shop. When I picked it up I thought that it should have had more than just fat beads layed onto the steel. I've heard others weld in off cuts of steel or bolts etc between the teeth. This would have resulted in a better job. It hasn't totally broken but each of the four welds is broken.
I thought about rewelding it myself. Why pay for someone else to stuff it up? But with a stick welder, you really need to pull the centre apart and I hate to see how it went back if I had anything to do with it
My spring hangers haven't fallen off yet
Apart from a few teething problems, my trac bar has been ok. Although I had to belt the f*ck out of the diff centre to remove it from the rear housing as by trac bar bracket obscured the centre somewhat. I fixed it though before I put the other centre back in. I just ground a bit off - not the bracket.....the diff centre!

Ruff, they havent broken yet, been in for about 2-3 months, not a lot of 4wheelin been done in that time but what has been i have flogged the crap out of em, just ask dirtpigs about the 2wd front wheel lifting effort, (did a rear tailshaft centre bearing then- was near new). I'm sure they will break at some stage, but thats what everyone said about my 5.71's when i had em. They survived in my rig for around 4ys and as far as i know are still going strong in someone elses rig. Maybe sometimes you can just be lucky and get good gearsets.
