Self engaging 4wd

Self engaging 4wd
Hi all
I have a 93 paj with the superselect 4wd and am having a major problem with it. It appears to be putting its self into 4wd while i am driving. The front wheel lights come on and then i hear an awerful noise, grinding metal. It goes away as soon as i put it into 4wd (centre open) but is still there when i take it back out.
Has anybody had this happen?
My mechanic and Miti dont have the foggiest itad where to start

Yep I'd say one of the solenoids (located on drivers side inner guard) is playing up.
Carl is right engine vacuum is used to keep the front diff in the free wheel position. When 4x4 is selected vacuum is released and the front diff engages the right side drive shaft.
You can replicate this condition by coasting along and turning off the ignition and leave the car rolling a horrible crunching/grinding noise can be heard. This is due to the ignition being switched off and vacuum being released letting the front diff engage. The crunching noise is due to the front propshaft not spinning (still in 2wd) and therefore not turning the front diff all of a sudden the dog clutch (which is spinning at the same speed as your right side wheel) is trying to engage a static diff = not good.
It is designed as a fail safe system so if the car stalls when in 4x4 the front diff will always stay engaged.

Am I right in thinking that a dodgy solenoid will only pull the front hub in and doesnt engage 4wd? If this is that case and you cant find a suitable hack to keep em unlocked then there is no harm done in driving there and back with the hubs engaged (except a little reduction in fuel economy).

Just disconnect the vacuum hose from the diff actuator (make sure you plug it) and this will engage the free wheeling hub. The dash lights will show you are in 4x4.
It will be fine to drive around like this it will still be in 2wd until you move the t/case lever. You may loose a little fuel economy if that is an issue for you.
