Can you believe this???

Had to take my truck over the pits ( Qld dept transport inspection station) to get my body approved yesterday. Now what I thought might be a simple procedure turned out to be the exact oppisite!

When I put the 50mm blocks in, I (under guidence from On-Track 4wd centre) left the original spacers in. these spacers measure in at 15mm. Now the genius at the pits has deemed that I have lifted my truck 65mm and therefor has not approved the body lift. Not only that but he also found a few worn bushes and quite a few other picky things!

I just rang On-Track and they told me that this guy was wrong and I shoud go back. But the same idiot will tell me the same thing! So thinking of going out to the station at Darra.

Anyways...there is my bitch session for the afternoon.

will keep you all up to date on how things go from here!

Ring the guys supervisor and tell him what has happened. Or you could go back there another day and you might get an inspector that was gifted with a brain.

I had mine approved in the condition you described - original factory bushes below the spacers.

Damn shame you hit the dud. :cry: Don't forget to fix the other crap he picked on, to show you're trying to cooperate - but don't take "no" for an answer!

Can you take along a stock vehicle to show the idiot what yours started like?

he is wrong (as most of dot are). you must keep the factory rubbers.

and being factory oe they cannot take this "extra" height into the overall lift... :x

I had my body lift inspected at Zillmere and it was passed on its first visit. They do a full inspection as it says on the letter you would have been sent. This includes their brake machine and their wobbly plate machine. It's fun when you pull on the handbrake and it throws your car backwards off the machine :lol:

My body lift comprised of 43mm alloy blocks on top of the factory rubbers.

Since I only went 43mm the inspector asked me why I didn't just do 50mm since that is the maximum allowed :)

I guess your inspector was having a bad day.

This one should be taken along to the DOT info evening for discussion. Even though he was obviously wrong inconsitencies like this should be pointed out, so they can improve their systems and training. I know nothing will happen but its worth mentioning.

Got mine booked in in about a months time so we will see how it goes. I had to use a couple of washers, as the threads were a bit short, and bolts a bit long, but you can only go up 50mm in bolt sizes according to the bolt shop. Any way will i be right with the washers?

Was it the Woodridge dot. A lot of truck owners I know won't take their trucks there for machinery. They go to Zilmere..Theres a guy at Woodridge dot that is just stupidly picky..

Huh? from the bolts i've worked with you can usually go up by alot smaller increments than that, usually 1/4" in imperial, or 15 or so mm in metric. A bit off-topic though...

Woodridge?

I was told by DoT that I could only have my inspection done at either Darra or Zillmere.

I had mine done at Caboolture; two blokes, in and out in less than 15 minutes. About half that time was chasing paperwork, because it was late booking and they weren't expecting me.

They told me they didn't bother with a full inspection, because the vehicle looked well maintained and they didn't expect to find problems.

The thing about this is... this is a mistake that refuses something that should get through... but how much else is the guy missing? What is he letting through that he shouldn't be?

We have a right to expect consistency and correct decisions. Did any written material you were provided with offer information about appeals processes ie "if you disagree with this decsision... blah blah..."? Most federal govt stuff does; dunno about Qld.

When my dad owned his prime mover, he was done when he went through the pits at Woodridge.(put off the road).the guy said there was a crack it the chassic.When asking were, the guy had no response..Any way he look the truck to guy out Toowoomba way (this guy over ruled the DOT.)
took 3 hours to find, a hair line crack in behind the spring shackle plate.
ONLY VISABLE AFTER REMOVING 10 CHASSIC RIVETS FROM THE PLATE..
Repaired and signed off by the same guy..

I spoke to the QLD senior inspector todat after sending them a fax late yesterday afternoon. Anyways, after a quick discussion with him the body lift has been sorted and it turns out I was RIGHT :lol:

Of course I am still going to fix the remaining issues...But it felt good to get this one over the inspector!

Another issue that was written on the notice was that the steering column splin was not all the way in the housing. Now when the lift was done, obviously it pulls the column out a little bit. There would still be around 3/4 of spline still in the housing, but obviously he wants more! I have seen steering column extensions available from 4wd stores, so might be investing in one of them soon. Thats if they are legal on QLD roads...otherwise I dont know what I can do to fix that problem.

But here is something that could effect a lot of you guys out there...I was reading the latest brochure to do with mods today...and this came to my attention in regards to tyre/wheel size...

**The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size but the overall diameter of the tyre must NOT vary by more than 15mm.**

So that to me, means that anyone who owns a 4wd that came standard with 31" tyres, CAN NOT legally run 33" tyres as most people do. Just food for thought!

I thought everyone on here (from QLD) knew that...

7.50's though are 32", not 31", so 4x4's that came with 7.50's can legally run a 33". To know for sure though, you need to gar the standard size for the tyre fitted to your vehicle from the "wheel and tyre standards" or something like that. You can then go 15mm larger than the measurement in that book.

For the steering column, are you allowed to fit a spacer below/above the female splined sections (thereby moving it closer to the splined shaft).

Depending on the length of engagement, you can pull the collapsible section of your column a small amount to engage the spline further.
Also a lot of top mounts, under the dash, have slots so you can move the whole column down.

Thanks for the tip J Top...I will have a look tomorrow and see if mine can do that! Just looked for the extension and they go for about $150. If I dont have to spend it...I WONT!

Pardon my ignorance on the tyre issue...It appears I had that day off at 4wd school :?

If the largest tyre fitted to your 4x4 by the manufacturer was a 7.50x16 then you have to look up the standards manual for the "standard" DIAMETER of a 7.50x16. Then you are allowed to fit a tyre 15mm larger than that diameter.

The complicating factors are:
AFAIK (not seen the manual) there is a standard size for a:
7.50x16 with on-road tread pattern
7.50x16 with off-road tread pattern (larger diameter due to tread depth)

So there could be some discussion over which one of these you take. Then discussion over whether the replacement tyre must be - up to 15mm larger by the manufacturers specs or the tyre standards for that new size.

There is a lot of debate over what you can and can't fit in Qld. What the 15mm is bigger than i.e. physical measurements or sidewall.
However has anyone stopped to realise that even if you fitted a tyre that was 15mm larger in diameter then that only gives you 7.5mm more clearance? You may as well stay with your standard tyre!
So just go out and fit whatever tyre you like and be done with it :armsup:

When I was over the pits the inspector told me they normally only get picky if the tyres are more than an inch larger.
