Full Float Rear Axle
Would it be worth the hassle to make adaptors to bolt onto the end of the hilux rear housing to run hilux front disk with early 2 spot calipers on the rear?
i am wondering would there be any significant strength increase going to a full float using 4130 custom made rear axles?
i think it would be quite easy to make?
any major advantages besides when the axle brakes the wheel wont fall off?

No i havn't broken a rear axle so i wouldn't be bothered!
In a competition situation you are not going to get much further in 3 wheel drive!
In a normal wheeling situation just carry a spare axle and lock ring!
I can't see the point i would rather spend the time and money on something more important, like buying me and Sam beers for the next XRCC!
But don't let me stop you, thats just my thought!

I wouldnt do it for any reason to do with axle streangth as i dont beleive the hilux axle has any issues. But i would do it to run IFS hubs and get a wider axle.
Lux rear axles are a strong unit as is so i agree with Ruff and POS,
As for running 60 diff centres as Nick mentioned your robbing your self a lot of ground clerance.
nick i only said 4130 as that is what most poeple think of when you say chromoly - they would be 4140 as that is whay my works suppliers uses and 4130 is not as readly available as its 4140 counterpart
i know a lot of guys havn't broken any but some of the AZ guys in the states have i was actually more thinking of bling bling and making the adaptors to bolt onto a narrow track to widen to IFS width
and tony i had already thought of buidling it using IFS wheel flanges for an extra 70mm on the width of a wide track

Here's a kit sold in the US
http://www.frontrangeoffroadfab.com/floater.htm
Basically an adapter to bolt the front wheel spindle and a 79-81 Supra caliper with e-brake to the Hilux axle.

At least using the stub axles and an adapter you can always go back to a stock axle if you get rid of the rig or you do happen to brake an axle and need to get it going again.
Also same bearings front and rear and only need to carry one spare stub axle(i have seen the rear bearings frozen that bad to the diffhousing that the housing was destroyed removing it on a cruiser)

yeah good point bout the bearings, but regulary maintainence will prevent this.

Just build an adaptor to run front stub axles on the rear - and run LC drive flanges? on the rear
does anyone know is the bolt PCD on a wide track the same as a narrow track? or the same between big and small tube narrow tracks?
