What is the best all round tyre in 33's

Hi Guys,

Before I get ripped on I tried to serach but nothing specific came up

Basically I am running BFG AT's at the moment and was wondering if anyone ahs found a better alll round tyre

I do a bit of road driving but not too much so noise isnt a big concern to me

In regards to 4wding I dont do anything to serious , mostly use it for hunting and driving around out at Menai, some mud, but mostly bush tracks etc

Can anyone recommend a better tyre than the BFG AT

I reckon either MTR's or a BFG mud, both have been good, reliable tires in my experience.

I'd like to try Coopers but I don't have the cash...

i quite liked em, dug well in the mud, company is a joy to deal with if you have issues, and onroad their quieter than my bfg all terrains... well at least on my 40.

BFGs have thin sidewalls and as for Coopers heaps of people have had problems with chunks or complete lugs ripping off.

Those Mickey Thompson radial claws look the shit but arent they like 400 a pop and really a full time off road tyre ?

nah closer to 290, and their a streetable muddie... your thinking of the bias ply claws i think... don't take no for an answer either, alot of 4x4 shops and tire joints made this fawk up when my bro was after them, telling him he was stupid for wanting a "bias ply" for street use... they;d be like "yeah radial claws, their a bias ply tire ".oh and these shops are pretty big movers in the 4x4 world. luckily he found somewhere than knew the difference

if your car came with radials, its illegal to run bias ply.

i have a set of MTRs on my hilux excellent touring tyre with a little appeal "hardcore" 4x4ing

i run baja radials (noiser) on my jeep for more serious off roading - a lot better traction in mud and general dirt.

i have also had bfg mud terrains these are also an excellent tyre somewhat between the baja radial and the mtr.

Had 33 inch a/t style Coopers on a HJ75 series ute great tyres, currently have BFG M/T's on my 80 series also a good tyre but maybe a bit noisy for what you want.

My first set of Cooper STTs lasted for about 15000km on my GQ LWB(mostly city/highway use) when they started cracking and disintegrating. I managed to get them replaced on warranty and my second set has lasted for about 25000k and starts showing similar symptoms now. I dont think they had to work hard. I also noticed that they are plain dangerous on gravel at higher speed when I could not keep up with other cars fitted with MTRs and BFG ATs.

That's my two cents.
My next tyres will be MTRs.

i got mine for $290 fitted and balenced... but i didnt get any hat and i damn well want one, ill back micky t radial claws all the way...

will not buy any other radial tyre again.

MTR's i hear are a fair bit noisier. BFG have proven time & time again.
BFG are much better on road i hear. How much noise & decrease in road performance do you want to go?

I'd go BFG - Just ring all the places for $$$. Got mine from Swant Street Tyres - richmond. Lyoids the man.

Interesting. I actually just replaced my MTR's and got BFG MTs , same size, same rims even... (only got BFG's due to an amazing price ) and sadly they arent shit compared to MTR's on road They slide, squirm round corners - (they almost felt like a JT2 at 10psi on the road)... serves me right for bein broke.

Noise wise, new tire V old tire will always be different. but when Im rich, I'll get the MTR's again without fail. But when I got the MTRs I had BFG before (the old style), and the MTR's were loads quieter than the BFG's.

bogged, how do you find the mtr's in the mud compared with the bfg muds? i've heard the MTR's don't really like victorian mud much

procomp x-terians have a similar tread patern to claws and a cheaper (especialy in 35i) what do u guys rate them against claw they don't seem as chunky

but as it stands they are my options 35i xterains or 33i claws.

i'll agree with bogged... bfg muds were the shizniz a few years ago, but their design hasn't been updated in yonks... with the recent slew of new types of muddies hitting the roads, i think bfg's are more trading on their name than anything now.

Its more the compound thats the loss now, they are FN soft as.. which is a shame, but get what ya pay for. The tread pattern isnt REALLY that much different to what it was - and in that aspect, I think they are fine. The old ones worked shit hot, have only had these 2 weeks, so havent hit the shitzen yet

to be honest, I never had a problem with them up high country, night run to Toolangi with this crowd, Kinglake, Eildon, and out in the desert they were great.

As I said, I'll get em again - quiet on road, work great in the wet road, dry, good offroad, work well down to 12psi on rim no problem...

I have heard of people having issues on really loose gravel fire trails..
