I`ve got i Whining noise in the T/case or gear box in my fj45, I get about 30khr before it starts and its still there in nuetral and T/case is in nuetral

i get the same problem as soon as i touch my clutch it goes away what the %#$@ is it, it drives me mad.

is it hard to change gear ? sounds like a noisey thrust bearing
if its hard to change gear it could be a siezed/seizing spigot bearing

does it change tone when your clutch is applied ?

does your model box have a clutch inspection plate ?

Yours sounds like the front bearing in the gearbox.

Have you checked the Uni Joints. Does the noise go away after a certain speed?

semi hijack -> similar prob in a 75 series, damn thing makes a racket in all gears except 4th????? :bad-words: any ideas guys?? oh and mine's not there when the clutch is in.
Is it beer o'clock yet??

A bearing in the layshaft or the the layshaft gears. 4th gear has no gears and is created by just linking the input and output shaft together, thats why 4th is generally always 1:1 ratio in most gearboxes.

thanx mate, that's very interesting, the thing had dad and I perplexed as to why 4th gear was all good, is it a major fix?

mine as soon as you put the slightest bit of pressure on the clutch petal it goes away it make the sound in every gear most noticeable when down shifting cause my exhaust isnt as loud buy like i said it is the littlest bit of pressure like move the pedal 10mm and it goes away even when driving any suggestions.

Not that hard if you know what a gearbox looks like on the inside. If your just going to do the shaft bearings then its pretty easy, if you go taking apart the dogs and syncros etc then it can get a bit hairpulling. Best look in your repair manual and see if you can tackle it or not.

If not, pull the box out yourself and send it off for a reco, if thats too hard then its going to cost you.

Like ruff said, input shaft bearing. Your in the same boat as stu, box out, apart and change the bearings. ;)
