Max. Size Rubber with no SOA
Max. Size Rubber with no SOA
Okay. I know a lot of threads have been up regarding bodylift, 33's, springs etc. etc. etc. So here it is.
I've got an MK ute (check out my members thread), and was planning on an SOA, but decided not to (the cheap setup i wanted is now sold).
So, with a 2" bodylift, angle grinder ready to "adjust" front guards, higher springs, and possibly longer shackles, what size tyres could i possibly fit under this thing?? The back wont be a problem (making own tray), but just need clearance on the front. I was thinking maybe 37's???
Also, the car has been kitted out with super-mega-heavy duty springs, with those extra-load thingies on the back. What options do i have with springs etc.? Get some standard ones re-set? I'm after about 3 inches increase over standard. More lift is better!! Road handling isn't really a factor in this car, as the sway bar is being removed, and its for play only, no huge raod trips etc.
Cheers - Coxy

Why do I want to fit 37's? Basically i'm after the biggest tyre i can fit, mainly for the obvious reasons (clearance, driving through huge holes with ease etc. etc), but if a cheap set of 36's, or even 35's come up i'll probly grab them. I had a set of 35" claws, and sold them a few weeks ago (now regretting it), but i dont think they'd cut the mustard. I'm after big.
Also, i know that NONE of my mates could afford/fit/mod their trucks enough to even fit 35's. I suppose it'll give me bragging rights until one of them gets a better car than a hilux.

I have 35" BFG Muds and Q78 swampers both on 15x8 Cruiser offset rims and I haven't had either tyre rub on the leaves.coxy321 wrote:One of my mates (got a 2.4 hilux dual cab) borrowed the claws off me, and couldn't turn full lock, cause the tyres would hit the leave packs!! Has anybody run into this problem? How much clearance do you have big red toy?

plenty of room, make sure u get toyota offset rims thou otherwise they will rub
i've got q78's on toyota offset and its good as no rubbing at all, except for that flab behind headlight

On my mates mq, we are running 35 inch centerpeads, SPUA, with stock springs and no body lift. we added a bit more bump stop and trimed the guards. still to lower the the shocks/put loger ones on.
Looks fat, and has a low COG
Point being SPOA you should be able to run quite large tyres and even larger if you dont mind trimming.
Dont be afraid to bump stop, it keeps the car stable.
And your's being a ute will make it even easyer

yea mine hits the leaf packs (mq ute with 36" x 12.5" centipedes) at lock, its fine with 35" bfg's tho, just don't turn the wheel as far
or get offset rims. and yea i get 36"s on it with a 2" bodylift and 2" suspension + reverse shackel front, dropped hangers, and i'm running GQ flared gaurds slightly trimmed.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots
By adding more bumpstop you make the bumpstops longer to reduce the up travel.coxy321 wrote:Going for 2" body lift, extended shackles, and i'm going to chase up some springs and get them re-rolled to 2-3 inches of lift, with cruiser offset 15x8" rims.
Sounds like 37's could fit. 36's definately.
What do you mean by adding more bump stop ljxtreem?

Looks like its probly had some suspension work. Here's a pic of my wagon with 35x11.5 trekkers, on 2" lifted susp. and extended shackles. (hhhmmmm...i remember getting the absolute p!ss taken out of me for this pic).
That a cooler in the front??? How does it go in the mud?? (I'm throwing a top mount in the ute)

Re: Max. Size Rubber with no SOA
Yeah, 37's will fit at a push. Honestly, the rear is where things are tight. With an angle grinder (and the other mods you mention) you'll find lots of space in the front gaurds. I haven't seen many (or any that I can think of - maybe that Scandanavian bloke on this forum that cut his guards up the waazoo) that run 37's on SPUA, but I reckon it could be done.coxy321 wrote:So, with a 2" bodylift, angle grinder ready to "adjust" front guards, higher springs, and possibly longer shackles, what size tyres could i possibly fit under this thing?? 3 is tricky. Lots of spring manufacturers making 2", but 3" is rare. 3" is big arch, with corresponding little flex. Beef up the spring hangers and put the longer shackles on instead. Also, the car has been kitted out with super-mega-heavy duty springs, with those extra-load thingies on the back. Lots of MQ/MK's already have their sway bar removed, and are still road going. The sway bar is a reasonably minor improvement really. You may regret big lift at the detriment of flex, suppleness, stability or strength. Not that I'm discouraging the goal, just encouraging some consideration in the process.More lift is better!! Road handling isn't really a factor in this car, as the sway bar is being removed, and its for play only, no huge raod trips etc.
Certainly have. On 35" MT/R's with 2" BL, 2" spring lift I can touch the leaves on full lock. Will still drive (only done at low speed), so not worth adjusting lock, but vibrated on the lugs and takes the coating off the leaves. One of my mates (got a 2.4 hilux dual cab) borrowed the claws off me, and couldn't turn full lock, cause the tyres would hit the leave packs!! Has anybody run into this problem?
Like others have said, the main problem in the front is leaves (backspace the rims) and the front light gaurds (piss them off). The rest is hollow gaurd which can be cut.
You may have a 37" rig with flex like a mini minor, but I reckon it'll work.

Nice one. It looks like i'll be making up the suspension out of the stuff on the ute atm, and out of the stuff i took off the wagon. I think the springs of the wagon should be okay for the 2" lift - just have to work out how many of the leaves i'm going to leave in. I'm thinking 4 in the front, and 3 in the back (wont be towing or load carrying).
I'm going to have to borrow some 37's to check out my guard trimming. Heathx4, were you using the cruiser or patrol offset rims when they hit the springs?
Cheers - Coxy

I really don't think you'll maintain 2" of lift with only 3 leaves, but that's just a guess.coxy321 wrote:I'm thinking 4 in the front, and 3 in the back (wont be towing or load carrying).

I'm going to try using the leaves already on the LSD diff i've got. (there's a pick in my membersthread). From memory they get used in SWB's. Hopefully they'll be the same length etc.
I might just throw the Opposite Lock setup from the wagon in the front and remove the sway bar. We'll see how i go tonight.
Cheers
