OK, I get to ask the newbie question of the day. Has anyone put a 5 cylinder turbo diesel from a Mercedes into a Range Rover Classic? What were the major issues? What type of adapers does it take to fit the engine to the tranny? Etc, etc.
I have looked at the Isuzu 4BT1, the Cummins, the SD33 - they are either too expensive, too heavy or too old. I have found several complete 300D cars with the Turbo Diesel for less than the 4BT1 engine.
I would like to pick the most bang for the buck. Something that I can drive at 80 and take for some light to medium off-roading. My Classic is a 1992 and is basically stock. I am considering lifting the body (to better accept the diesel that I eventually use) and putting larger tires on to get better gearing for the slower running engine.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks,
James

Newbie Question: Mercedes 5 cyl Turbo in RR Classic
Moderator: Micka
I actually thought about this a few months ago as i could have picked up a 300d engine for $300 ! there is a guy os that had / has 1 in his rangie, i believe also that they used a zf auto at some stage mated to the 5cyl engine which would make it easier for us to convert.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
