the highbeam is switched by earthing the high beam tap of the light globes. the centre tap is always positive, and either the low or high is earthed to light the light.

I got the set of rear gates i told you abour and fitted them. Not the easiest of jobs as I had to spread the rear pillars with a pneumatic ram by 60mm and bring the floor pan back out by 100mm (it was a mess).
Now just getting the roadworthy completed which brings me to the high beams not working. So those copper plates in my pic are just a switch to change the positive in the highbeams to a negative?

ok this is scanned from the gregorys' manual, and I have filled in the insides of the combination switch for you to help.
basically there is one set of double contacts (it appears from the diagram) that energises the headlight relay (red arrow). a set of single contacts (yellow arrow) energises the tail/parking lights relay.
a BIG set of contacts switches low beam or high beam to ground (low beam green arrow, high beam blue arrow)
the code for the wiring colors on the diagram is:
B Black
L Blue
G Green
R Red
Y Yellow
W White
N Brown
O Orange
K Pink
S Grey
V Violet
P Purple
X Light Green
Z Light Blue
M Dark Green
T Dark Blue
A Light Brown
E Slate
D Tan
I have not shown the mechanical workings of the switch but with a meter and some probing appropritaly coloured wires it will be easy to figure out.

The answer is i dont know, but this is how u can find out
Whilst watching the switch, push the stalk back as in into the high beam position.....the contact that closes is the high beam negitive contact.....the one that opens is the low beam negitive contact.
There should be a third contact there that is the headlight relay negitive control feed. When you turn the lights to headlights, it should close, and stay that way.
Its a pity the oz cruisers rely on this system, european cruisers have a dimmer relay and can run higher wattage without toasting these relays.
