Diff Ratios for GQ

Post by MyGQ »

Ok i will try and make this as short as possible

I have a LWB 90's GQ.

I am running 33's on road and 35's off road however, i want to change out the diff's in order to bring the speedo and power back to original

i have a 4.2L Manual model which i believe runs 4.1:1.

What ratios would i need in order to get it to run 33" tyres at teh same rate as it would do with 31" tyres? 3.9:1?

4.3 for 33s 4.6 for 35s if your original ratio is 4.1

To check what you should have (as long as they havnt been changed already). There is a compliance plate or similar on the firewall. Look for the transcode, and HG??. Most likly it would be HG41.

As for were to get them. Theres a couple of places to get aftermarket gears for about $500 each end plus fitting. And they come in every ratio, 4.1, 4.3, 4.6 and 4.8. Plus some others.
Some people reccomend if the car does alot of K's to fit Geniune gears to the rear as they are always being used and fit the cheaper ones to the front.

Ok 4.1s I may have lied about but pretty sure I have seen 4.3's before. But I may be getting confused. This has come up a couple of times now.
Gen 4.1's I would imgaine since they are everywhere would be the same price as an after market gear though.

Do you think it's worth the change over?

I'm running 33s with original diffs and to be honest I don't notice any diff in power. Plus it probably cruises better on the highway....

I'm inclined to save for reduction gears later......

Borrow aset of 31s for a day, do back to back comparo's.. it is the only real way to tell.

Mine going from 4.1 to 4.3 was like another few lbs boost on the turbo - should have done it years ago :bad-words:

I noticed the power loss going from 31's to 33's.

I now run 33's onroad and 35's off road. and with 35's on i notice a crap load of power loss, however, when running 33's the mav runs pretty good in fact, so thats why i want to run the new ratios, give me some power whe on road and when off road would be the same powr loss as if i was running 33's only i will have 35's

If your running 35's you would want 4.6 not 4.3 as ya askin for in wanted section. Takes strain off clutch etc..

No i want to run 33's as if i had 31's which i am told is 4.3's. I am running 33's atm with 4.1's and i want the overall affect to be when i run 35's it is as if i was running 33's and when i run 33's its as if i was running 31's

33's are my primary tyres.

Fairy nuff, hairy mu... I only drove my GQ for a week after I bought it before it went into the workshop for lots of mods and service work. The engine wasn't running that smooth when I got it either.......so to be honest my comparison was pretty unsufficient :)
Wanna lend me some 31's for day?

Your compliance plate should have on it still the HG4.1 etc.

I have a stupid feeling most Mavs came with 3.9, but have a search of the forum, been listed before

If you go up 2 size in tire (31 - 33) you go up 1 ratio

3.9 - 4.1

if you go up 4 size in tire (31 - 35) you go up 2 ratio
3.9 - 4.3

etc

to get the same revs in the same gear as the Patrol does. I think it would work best to assume that it came with 29" tyres not like the patrol that came with 31's (and 4.1:1).
As I am sure the gear box ratios are the same. so the only variences is small wheels and lower ratio (ie 3.9:1) in the diffs.
