This year’s event will be held in Willow Grove and is specifically for novice drivers and navigators providing a genuine ‘entry level’ competition. With room for up to 40 teams (car, driver & navigator) we plan to have between 11 & 12 competition stages over three days (3 on Friday night, 5 to 6 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday).

Expanding on last years success we are promoting the 2005 event as a spectator spectacular and are actively pursuing public attendance for both Saturday (8am – 5pm) and Sunday (8am – 2pm).

With well over $10,000 worth of cash and prizes this is a prize pool worth going all out for and last years event was full of thrills and spills. To get a feel for last years event please visit Offroad Images website (URL below).

Competitor entries will open mid July 2005 and no previous competition experience is necessary with preference given to complete novices. We will be able to provide prospective competitors with a list of statutory safety requirements and compulsory equipment and also be able to provide details of companies able to help with vehicle preparation. Our goal with this event is to give people a low cost - low risk experience of the world of off road racing and hopefully inspire teams to continue into other events.

An event of this nature requires an enormous amount of work to put together and we require all sorts of volunteers both leading up to and on the weekend itself. As a complete novice, I'm interested in competing, would like to know more about what equipment and mod requirements or limits there are etc. I don't know anything about this event or competing in this sport, but am getting rid of my dirt bike to take this up so am pretty keen to get amongst it.

Hi Blkmav,

Firstly be under no illusion this is an entry level WINCH challenge. There are certain risks associated with winch challenges and although we design the tracks to reflect the novice nature of the event we still want it to be a challenge. As such we take safety very seriously and the vehicle and personal requirements are comensurate with the risk.

The original idea behind the Vic Winch was to give teams an opportunity to get experience so that they can go on to other 'A' class events, like the Ateco Winch Challenge, which all require previous competition experience.

Having said that you do not have to have a full comp spec vehicle to compete. The Vic Winch is a 'B' Class event, as specified under the rules, and apart from the usual recovery gear, winch, etc. the only mandatory safety modification required to vehicles is the fitting of a 4 point 'roll' cage.

Driver and navigator will be required to wear helmets but you can run with standard fitment seat belts.

There are events for people who do not want to modify their vehicles to this extent and still do a 4wd competition BUT these events are not against the clock and do not require winching (see links below)

Just how much experience is too much???
Is it possible to send in an application anyway.

Firstly we need to clarify what we class as previous experience. The definition we are using is that if you have been a driver in a competition that will count as previous experience IF YOU WANT TO ENTER AS A DRIVER. The same goes for navigators who want to enter as a navigator.

If you have had experience as a driver but none as a navigator and want to enter as a navigator then you are considered to have had no previous competition experience. Same will go for navigators with experience who want to enter as drivers.

Now just because you have had some experience does not immediately rule you out however we do have some automatic exclusions:

Any prospective driver who has had a top 10 finish in an 'A' Class event as driver.
Any prospective navigator who has had a top 10 finish in an 'A' class event as navigator.
Any prospective driver who has had a top 3 finish in a previous Vic Winch as driver.
Any prospective navigator who has had a top 3 finish in a previous Vic Winch as navigator.

An 'A' Class event would be like the Alpine Winch Challenge, Ateco Winch Challenge, Outback Challenge, Xtreme Winch Challenge etc.

It would be great to have a full field of teams where neither driver or navigator have had any previous competition experience. Unfortunately (or fortunately for teams with some experience) this is extremely unlikely so we encourage interested teams to put in an application. We will then 'grade' all the applications based on previous experience to produce a list (least to most experience). Acceptances will then be sent to the top 40 teams on our list.

May i sugest that next year the organisers of all the offroad events held in Australia consult Kane so that comps dont conflict with his itinery.

Yeah I suppose you don’t see any utes in or at winch comps .
I wasn’t saying that the Vic winch and ute muster are the same or linked together but I do know of a lot of people that would normally go to both if they were on separate dates. I was just making a point and was not asking for any special allowances to change the dates, just that they have never clashed before .

I have a new set of 36 Simex's at home and thought that Avoca would be very rocky not slippery red clay and i wanted to avoid driving 500KM there&back and cutting them up on the rocks ( Bad Choice ). I will certainly be at Vic Winch on the Simex's thou and close to home aswell.

If there isn't, there is great camping very close to the property in state forest.
Some great tracks too.

There is no spectator's on the Friday night and no spectator camping on the property over the weekend, each competing vehicle can have 2 "assistants" camping with them at $60 each (includes food) but otherwise spectators i believe will be charged $10 entry each day. Marshals can also camp on the property.

You still can! Just 5 mins from the property and you're in state forest with great camping.

Maybe there should be an OL camp site for all the weekend spectators?
