I have been offered an early Hilux with a blown motor at the right price and I am seriously considering buying it to build up a play toy. What I would love is some suggestions on mods. I was thinking about Lock rites F&R, a spring over, extended shackles, dual transfers, bobbed chasis etc, oh and of course a V8 or V6. It wouldnt be a daily driver, but for comp's nite runs etc.


Who has done what, what worked, what sucks, whats legal, whats not.. you know the drill

Weld the rear and with the money you save put in a air locker up front!

If you saw the qtr's on my 80 series you would understand. Actually One side will be sparkling again its in the panel shop today and we get it back tommorrow.

Im interested to know why you say not to go lockrites. I have one in the front of my 80 series and apart from a couple of hairy moments on greasy sideslopes, I havent had too many problems. A couple of times I have had trouble unlocking it but overall I havent had huge problems.

Anyway I would appreciate your thoughts here

If you want your truck legal then, there's not much point building it to play hard. Tyre size and the lift kit will beat you before you even start. :wink:

it all depends on what you want to do - my new lux - (bubs round 2) i hope to have completely legal besides the 37s/38s and maybe the extended shackles - but all the spring / shock mounts and cross over i will hope to have engineer approved

dude the only thing that makes mine not legal is the tyres

so wen u look at it if i run 35" pro crap xtrains on 18x8" rims then i can have it completly legal

and i run bout 8 - 10 " of total lift with all customs mounts and bars and ita al fully engineered

I had one of the lokka lock rights (cheap version of the U.S.A lockrite) and found it to harsh on the CV'S and axles!

It also wasn't very strong, i sheared the pins off!

If tight turning ROCKY situations it was quite difficult to turn from time to time, by forcing the turn you can imagine the stress not only on the CV's but also on the steering box, pump and links!

At least with the ARB you can turn it off and turn quite easily!!

The rear axles will easily stand the abuse from the welded diff!!!

I don't know if anyone has covered this but put in DUAL cases rather than reduction gears!

It just gives you more CHOICE!!!!

Oh i also noticed you said comps, night runs etc!!

You will need to have it registered for Night runs, Australian Short course and most othe club events, At the moment the only comp allowing un-registered rigs is XRCC!!!

The easiest way for you would be to do a GOOD engine conversion and all the other thing that can be approved and anything else after that you just run the risk of getting a defect!

Unless you want to trailer it!!!

I had someone tell me once that I should spring-under my Hilux to get more clearance under the diffs. He couldn't be convinced that it just didn't work that way....

Let the project begin . Just bought the car, and pick it up next weekend. (Wheeling at Cruiser Park this weekend, so can do it till enxt weekend). Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, I'm sure there will be a million more.

I have just found out that the motor in it is not blown. In fact it was rebuilt only 10k ago, but has blown a head gasket. could be a number of issues. 18R's are pretty gutless if I recall. Does anyone know any tricks on getting them to pull, or should I stick to the plan and update straight away.

A lso any Ideas on what will go in with minimum bucks, and maximum bang if I go the update path.

Most people i know are staying away from the V6/V8 holden engines as they are too expensive and require a fair amount of work to fit them!

For the same amount of work i am going for a 3.5 rover engine!

They are a lot cheaper and the carbies are great for any angle!

They are light and very strong reliable engines!

Or same thing just slightly BIGGER, the 4.4L!

If you want yo stay toyota i would go the 22R!

but you again pay BIG bucks!

Just another Question, what size tyres are you wanting to run!!!!

POS, I'll probably start with 35's. Most of you guys seem to be running 37's and bigger. I "Might" have my hands on some second hand 35" Pede's.

I will also go for dual transfers alsmost straight up, and this should help, but since the motor transplant should be first up, I want to get it right straight up and hopefully learn from you guys who have done it all before.

I might look around at the Rover stuff. Using the Rover, is there a brake upgrade required as well, and what's the Go Here.

Well i am only planning my swap to the 3.5 Rover!

I have been putting up with the 3Y until i found out for myself which engine would be better suited for me!

The 3Y has done the job (just) but to be more competitive the V8 is a must!

I am not to worried about a Brake upgrade! I seem to be able to pull up quite easily with 38.5's at the moment, the extra weight of the V8 shouldn't effect it to much!

However if you are keen and want to upgrade the brakes straight away then you can go with the Ventilated disc's of the 95 hilux's (i think thats around the right model) and you can also do a Disc brake conversion for the rear aswell! There are a number of different ways, some people have used Pajero disc and i have seen some us Nissan patrol discs aswell!

Its not hard to do, i have seen a couple done! The biggest issue is that you no longer have a hand brake!

There is a Kit from ALL PRO that bolts to the back of the transfer case and uses a disc brake bolted to the rear out put flange! It apparently works really well but you pay big bucks for something that is pretty simple to make, i just havn't been bothered fiddling around with it!

Probably one of the main things you want to look at is getting yourself a set of LONGFIELD CV's, they are awesome. They use to have a warrenty but that no longer applys. They are expensive but are worth every penny!

Also back on the topics of brakes you can also settle for getting a wide track diff out of a late model ifs 4runner, the drums are slightly bigger, and the track width is 3 inches wider overall!
