5.12 ratios - the real answers

I know u will tell me to search but I have and there are several different answers coming up. So back off :finger:

I want to put some vitara 5.12 ratios into a front sierra diff, so do I get them from the front or rear diff of a vitara.

Can I please have info only from people who have done it or do actually know cause like I said there have been several different answers in previous posts.

vitara front is a 10 bolt,

whats the bolt pattern of a sierra front?

im gonna tae an educated guess and say u will need the front crownwheel and pinion because of the direction that the teeth r cut, also i hope u got the same ratio in the rear.

Rear is taken care of, I am pretty sure its fronts so I will run with that. With the shim required does anyone know if it will be so if the diff is welded.

i think its front but youve got to change the side gears i think

I have 4.6 vitara ratio and all I did was take it from the front of a vit and bolt it straight into the sierra housing, after I welded the side gears though.

I think my mates uncle may know, he has a suzuki motorbike,
I reckon it may fit, but it may not (that bit I am sure of)
you might have to change the catalitic converter as well, I heard something about that on the internet, so it must be true,

You will need 2 front vitara diffs with the ratio of your choice.
the vit front axle is the same as a sierra rear axle but the sierra front axle is smaller so you will have to swap in the sierra side gears in the front, good luck.

two front Vit diffs - crown wheel and pinion
ratio - yr choice
add locker
bolt in
done.

are you planning on using your sierra centre or the vit centre? if the sierra just change the crown wheel and pinion , i didn't worry about shiming mine or my mates and there still going strong after about 2 years and there both welded ,

i thought there were issues using a vit centre as of lube problems or something? but dont quote me on that , i think it was DOZOOR that was saying about the differences strengths, weakness etc WAAAAAY back

The vit front will bolt straight into the sierra front. For the rear you need to put the vit ring and pinion into the sierra diff centre which i did coz its stonger or you could put the sierra side gears into the vit centre.

Okay, so to get the 5.12 gearing into Sierra, I will need two Vitara front diffs? Need to find two donors not one?

Which year model Vitara do I need to visit in the middle of the night and leave up on blocks :lol: How can I tell what ring and pinion is in the diff without opening it up and counting teeth etc?

If aftermarket (Rocky Road) 4.57 gears provide a 23% overall reduction and 5.38 gears provide a 44% overall reduction. I assume that 5.12 will be around the 30-35% mark and will bring 33" back pretty close to stock, is this correct?

If 5.12s are installed in the Sierra diff, what impact will this have on a locker (okay i know someone will say "just weld it", but will a Sierra locker still fit?)

1. Yes 2 Vits with the same ratio
2. carbed 1.6= 5.125
3. you do the math :)
4. I have 5.125's in mine and 2 air lockers.

I run 5.12s, a series 3 and 33s, the gearing is just as good as stock on 22's :D

Hmm, too low for street driving. I do 100 often between wheeling and home. What sort of rpm will it be revving at. i also do a bit of sand and mud driving that need some wheel spped. I am guessing i would be using 3rd instead of 1st on the sand.

I am guessing for rockhopping it would be ok for.

For a lil' while I ran 31's with 5.12's & dual tfc's on the road- was doing 4,200 rpm at around 100 :shock: 33's with the above equal around 3,900rpm at 100 and yes- feel like stock tyres in the way the acceleration behaves. Got lockers in both- not that that makes a difference in final drive anyways :D

p.s. crawls a smooth 52:1 in low/low and pulls like a freight train in low :armsup:

you have a 5 speed box, don't get locked into the notion that you need to be in 1st low all the time.
I have 5.125:1's, 33" tyres and a series 3 r/hoppper, my engine is doing 4500 RPM @ 100 KM (approx) it is not good for my engine on the way to the bush, but it is great when I get there :lol:

Whats the strength of these like. I have heard stories of lacking in meat on the crown.

Thanks on the gear info. looking better the more i look at it.

What have people paid for them before, may have found a couple but unsure what to pay for them.

Whats 31/26? Then what's 5.12/3.73?

The difference between them is the % change to rpm

31/26 = 1.2:1

5.12/3.73 = 1.37:1

If you want 20% shorter gearing than stock go for it.

remember there are 4.6 and 4.8 vitara cenrtes too
