driving without shocks, dumb idea???
i didnt know if this would be classed as general tech or not, so my bad if it should of been.
last week i put 2in extended greasable shackles (front and back) on my cruiser. it gets mad flex(compared to what it used to have) when i take the shockies out. i take em out because they are still the sh*tty standard travel ones, and i reckon that the shock having no travel is holding the leaves flat, reducing the lift.
how would i go driving around on the road with the shocks out? would it stuff anything up mechanically as my dad keeps telling me? or just make for a more uncomfortable ride?? would it drastically change the handling??

One of my mates busted both front shockers on his 96 model dual cab hilux. It wasn't too bad, quite a bit bouncy though.
As far as the lagal side of things go, i reckon you'd probly get locked up if there happened to be an accident. Just run the standard ones until you can afford long travel ones. Dont make yourself another statistic.

Unroadworthy.
No insurance.
Unpredictable handling.
Axle tramp under load.
For what??? Something that seemed like a good idea at the time???
If it such a good idea, then why don't more ppl do it..................
"Unradworthy 4WD kills child at school crossing"
getting the hint?

George Carlin, an American Comedian said; "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise that half of them are stupider than that".
yeah fair enough, i didnt know wether or not it would drasically change the handling or not, thought it would be a good idae to ask before i did it, as for new shocks, being an apprentice and having a cruiser to pay off and fuel, moneys sorta short. so i guess ill just have to keep takin em on and off when i hit the tracks for a while. haha thanks guys.

How is this part any different from a million other modifications that we do? Bigger tyres come to mind.GaryInOz wrote:Unroadworthy.

As for owning a Cruiser on apprentice wages You must need to take out a loan every time you fill up!

no shocks?!
You're halfway there big red. Read the orange highlight.
As others have said.....Its illegal and you would probably end up in jail if you crashed it ......especially if someone got hurt.....on any public road or track!
Its illegal cos its dangerous.
On another note, years ago my older brothers first car was an old mini which had no springs cos his "mate" that he bought it from hadnt finished the intended work and my bro was keen to get mobile
You shoulda seen how solid it was especially around corners. Handled like a go-kart. Got up on two wheels sometimes and I was shitting myself! We thought it was a blast though but in retrospect we coulda farked ourselves up bad or someone else but when your young you dont really consider consequences that much
Keep upright
Cheers

mate, measure up your shocks, and find out if the are pin or eye fittings to and bottom, then post up on here and ask for any secondhand ones, i'm sure people will give you a good pair of secondhandys for a 6 pack of booze.bIg_ReD_bOiNs wrote:yeah fair enough, i didnt know wether or not it would drasically change the handling or not, thought it would be a good idae to ask before i did it, as for new shocks, being an apprentice and having a cruiser to pay off and fuel, moneys sorta short. so i guess ill just have to keep takin em on and off when i hit the tracks for a while. haha thanks guys.

im not exactly mechanically challenged, ive been workin on drag cars for a fair few years with some mates, but im really still a bit of a noob when it comes to suspension, like atm i still dont fully understand how a coil setup works. beside the point. but what im trying to say is, how do i measure up what size shocks i need.

what drag cars??
measure from the centre of the eye(if they are eye type shocks) or from the base of the pin( if they are pin type shocks)
measure from one end to the other, and tell us if they are eye-eye, pin top-eye bottom or what ever. measure fully extended, and fully closed.
I used to run a drag car myself, now i crew on my brothers super sedan.

nothing real serious a mate of mine used to run an lx torana, 350 chev crate motor, we didnt do much to it just put it in, power glide, ford nine inch. we oly changed the motor(had a shitty 308 in it) the rest was done when he bought it, took us ages to do it cause he aquired a missus just after we started. we got it finished took it for like 3 runs up at willow bank, then he wrapped it round a pole and wrote it off. his mum and the missus went spaz and made him sell what was left, now he drives a clapped out v8 rangie. poor form on his part.
im off to measure the shocks, cheers guys!

grab your self a tape measure and head on down to your local self-serve wreckers, you'll be suprised what will fit and how long some "car" shocks are.

I don't get it?? Suspension plays a vital role in transfering power to the ground in a Drag car.grazza wrote:pity you were into straight line racing, if you were into circiut racing you would know about suspension...ive been workin on drag cars for a fair few years with some mates, but im really still a bit of a noob when it comes to suspension, like atm i still dont fully understand how a coil setup works. beside the point. but what im trying to say is, how do i measure up what size shocks i need.

as i said most of the work was done when he bought it the only thing we played with was the engine we didnt get a chance to do anything else cause he wrecked the car, and he hasnt been able to get the money to buy a new toy yet, he and his dad are much more into it than i was, i was just there for the engine bit really, then i discovered 4x4ing... much more fun.
