Here are some pics of the bell housing extension, and some install tips for the dellows kit.

Problems I found with the kit:

1. The flywheel ring gear clearance was not machined out enough - I had to machine out some material to allow clearance for the ring gear.

2. All of the M10 and M8 bolt holes had to be re-tapped - the originals were just too small (manufacturer must be using worn out taps)

3. The clutch cable slot needed more material removed to enable cable fitment.

4. The passenger side brass engine mount bracket needed a small amount of file work to allow the fitment of the standard alternator.

5. The gearbox crossmember mounting holes and the rubber gearbox mount mounting holes needed to be slotted to line up correctly.


Apart from these minor glitches, I found the kit very easy to install.

The thickness of the extension housing is 62mm (I tried to hold a ruler up to it but the reflection killed the detailed measurement)

I will add more info as I remember it - I did this about 5 years ago.

Haven't had a reply from dellows yet...
When fabbing one myself, do you have any suggestions how to line up the inputshaft and the flywheel correctly? I can use the flat plate on the back of the engine and the gearbox to determine the boltholes.

BTW, Is that the original starter, mine is a different model

Best way is if you have the motor and box out of the car, support them on stands/hoist, then line up and measure from there.

Is this Dellows kit to adapt a Toyota 18R to the Daihatsu F20 drive train? I was just curious as to what you are talking about; myself having a Daihatsu/ Toyota hermaphrodite :scatter:

Yep, to the 4 or 5 speed box.

Ron, I spoke to Dellow today, they still do make the kits, but to order only. The person who handles these kits was not in today (friday) but will be in the office on the monday, so I will call them and get some firm details on the kits for you then.

The guy I bought the engine from had it laying under his workbench for 2 yrs. It came out of a car in running condition. unfortunately it has no inlet manifold and the dual webers were also sold, so I managed to shake the price down quite a bit. That's really all the info I got on the donk. Time will tell if this buy is a real bargain or if I just bought myself a Twin cam boat anchor :lol:

Gonna do some basic testing tomorrow and remove the valve cover to see what it looks like inside. It seems that de crank rotates smoothly. Can't do a compression test right now because I can't mount the starter that came with it.

I'm not sure which way to go yet since it is an 18rgeu which was original a fuel injected version. I can try to source the original fuel inject. gear or source a manifold and do a single or dual carby setup. All things that are crossing my mind right now.

It will be a part of my f20 restoration project so I won't do the conversion right now, just trying to find out how much effort it would take and sourcing parts. I'll dismantle the old girl next month and start on the chassis, then I'll try to fit the drivetrain with the engine and without the body on it. Do you know from memory if the front engine mounts line up ok?

It's really great that someone from the other side of the globe is willing to take some time and effort to help me out. Cheers for that :armsup:

You use the original 12R rubber engine mounts, new adaptor brackets (cast brass - bolt onto the engine block, then onto rubber engine mounts - rubber engine mounts then bolt directly to chassis in original holes) come with the Dellows conversion kit - these allow the fitment of the engine using the original engine block mounting holes and standard 12R rubber engine mount blocks. The rubber blocks on the 18R will not line up to the chassis.

I would definately go the EFI. :armsup:


I spoke to Jeff from Dellows today, he said he had received your email, his son had sent through a reply. He said it was much easier though to deal with someone in aus, but was still very positive about making up the kit. He will search for the patterns and moulds for the kit, I will talk to him again on the wednesday to see if he located them.

I know from past experience how hard it can be to get help/tech/aftermarket components for these rigs, I've had mine for over 15 years, so I've had my fair share of brick walls. Helping someone on the other side of the world is no barrier.

Great, found their reply in my mail this morning. Seems they're willing to ship to the Netherlands. Good that these kits come with engine mounts cause I noticed they won't line up'. Haven't really had time to open up the engine since it was one of the few sunny days here (meteorologists here say it has something to do with Katrina :? ). But it turns freely, plugs look ok, waterpump also and the sump and oil left is clean. I'm gonna do a check up and rebuild it anyway because I don't know the history of the donk. So any defects I'll fix in the process. As long as the head or block aren't warped or cracked internally, but no way for me to find out at this moment.

Another thing, did you use the 12r flywheel and clutch or those from the 18r?

I used the 18R flywheel and clutch. Uses the same throwout bearing, but I replaced mine with a new one during the install.

ah.. the old 18R...

Used to have a fully worked 18R in my '76 Sillycar... they run pretty well off a 32/36 DD Weber, I did prefer the old Holley carby though.
