Post by bru21 »

i want to build my internal cage now. only prob is that i have an exo so i want to build it really light to minimum ccda specs. my speedwerx bender has tube dies so thin pipe with od 48mm doesen't bend real well. can anyone get 50.8mm od in 2mm wall. i can get all the 38mm i want just no 50.8.

To get the OD of 50.8mm (2") it will be tube and to get it 2mm thick i would be looking into heavy exhaust tube as that all i think you will find.

Don't know too much about the description (ie: 50NB light) but these guys may have something, or Jacksons at Redbank.

Careful, pipe, is measured by I.D so you way not the 2" (50.8 mmO.D.) that you're after.

Also pipe doesn't like to be bent, especially tight radii like 1 - 1.5 diameter. This is due to the possibility of the pipe splitting along the seam.

Tube is more suitable to bending, go for seamless if you can, so you don't have worry about the seam being on the neutral axis when you bend it.

Just use some cold drawn tube. 2" X .083", it bends well and welds nicely and it will do for what you want. .083" gives a wall thickness of around 2.1mm - 2.2mm.

Try Atlas Specialty Metals. They should have or get that size tube in mild or stainless. but s/s = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Lots of bling though!

Actually in some of the applications at work we find stainless to be surprisingly cost effective. We build the "nerf" bars (rear push bar and side header anti intrusion bars) for the sprintcars we work on out of stainless.
We find they are tougher than mild steel and not as expensive as Chrome/Moly ones and don't need to be zinc plated like the steel/moly ones we do. These are almost considered a "disposable" item in sprintcar racing now and we haven't built a steel/moly one in ages.
What we have found though is the quality of stainless varies widely, some of the cheap shiat from Asia is crap and won't bend to the same angle on our hydraulic bender so we only buy stainless sourced from STM tube mills in New Zealand, we've never had any problems using their material.

I'm glad its cost effective for you and I bet your customers are too :D

But stainless is more expensive than m/s but we know its not exactly gold prices.

I've done a lot of s/s fabricating too and its the labor cost also that I was meaning to get across to bru21.
As you would know, fit up, weld prep, tig welding, gas flushing, pickling cleanup etc etc with s/s takes more time than miggin up mild steel.

I heartily agree with you on the varying quality of s/s. Most of it we use is sourced from Japan and the quality is pretty good but there are other mills around Asia that leave quality to be desired.
Yeah, you gotta take ya hat off to the Kiwi's for some of the stuff they produce. They are one of the world leaders in producing food processing equipment.

Bru21, just a word of caution if you go the stainless.(m/s as well)....try to elimate all sharp corners especially near welds as constant vibration and stress causes cracking in thin s/s due to its work hardening characteristics. leave everything with a nice radius.

Cheers

thanks fellas. i work a lot with stainless atm and i source it from midway metals in yatla. its pretty cheap. i have never tried to bend 2" but 1"1/2 will not bend with the die radiuses i have it kinks in the inner surface, and speedwerx says that you cannot do it in their booklet and need a bigger radius. welding it takes no longer as i just mig it, so its a 2 min wire swap, i have just started getting the 316 in 15kg rolls so i have plenty.

not sure what ccda/cams thinks of s/steel

anyway this is what speedwerx has said:

Justin, try Ken Lowe Racecars in QLD or Racetech 02-96744566, they will send it to you and offer a good service.
Regards, Stewart McNabb

so i will give them a go tommorow.

cheers bru
