ripping the sidewalls...

ok yes another tyre topic.... we should do a sticky on them..

basically ive been running claws for 5 years now.
all on the zook with different mods over the years.

ive had 2 sets of 31" claws radial on 15x7"
1 set of 33" radial claws on 15x7" and the same set on 15x8"
now i have a set of 35" radial claws on 15x10"

on the 31" to 33" on 15x7 and 8 rims i never puntured a sidewall.

now that i have the 35" on 15x10 i puntured the sidewall on the first outing on them(10psi) and again the other day getting it off the trailer.(20 psi)

i drive the same terrain as i used to so its not that.
could it be the larger sidewall of the 35 or could it be the 10" rim

should i give the 8" rim a go?

Only my opinion but better to run tyres on the smallest recommended rim width as it "pulls" the sidewalls in more when aired down leaving them a little less vulnerable to staking.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people tell you otherwise, but I dare say, you've just reaffirmed my point to yourself already ...

I run 36" Pedes on a 16"x8" rim and find I can drop them to 10psi (tubes but no beadlocks) under a 2+ tonne GU before the sidewalls start to bulge. I know they have a very thick sidewall but the tread contact patch elongates noticeably before the sidewalls start bow out. BTW, Simex recommends I use a 10" rim but I reckon on 10s there would get way too much sidewall hangin out. For me, so far no probs.

so what did it get caught on? or rubbing on something? or..??

the hole bed of the trailer hinges from the middle to form a tilt.

the hooks to hold it from tilting are on the end of the trailer just behind the wheelarch...

it was hard pressed against the 2 wheelarches (squished) then hit the lock hitch as we pushed it off the trailer.

ive ran with alot of people with mtrs and only ever seen 1 punture and that was because it was to low and the rim pinched the tire on a rock

sounds like his radial claws are made out of tissues

i've just got some 35" claws and 15" x 8" rockcrawler rims. only used them once and aired down to 20 lbs and they bulged a bit, on 10" it would be real bad imo. couple of guys including another running 35" claws said to stick to no wider than 8" for your exact problem plus more likely to pop it off the bead.
