What is involoved in doing a 3/4 or 1/4 eliptic in the rear of a SWB sierra? If possible using std zook springs. All SPUA. doing RUF front. What is the difference between the two. I have seen grimbos zook rear but only flex pics.
I have seen some tech somewhere but don't know where I found it.
Any disadvantages of this mod...
cheers

3/4 works well on a narrow track as the spring hangers are directly under the frame so ou have a nice level surface for the spring to sit. With a WT you have te problem of the spring perches being offset from the frame. SPUA and 3/4 is a good combination as it gives a nice controlled flex without any strange habits. If you go SPOA and 3/4 then you will find that you will have a very flexy but hard to control set of springs.
Similarily a 1/4 can give the same adverse flex if not done correctly. Alot of the old school desert race trucks used 1/4 to great effect bt you need to have well tought out and setup links to make them usable. If done incorrectly you end up wih something with oodles of uncontrolled rear flex that will tend to flex and flex and flex then fall over
I forgot what thread it was in but grimbo posted some pics of his. easy to do just half spring connected to chassis with two U bolts. Then use another U bolt to pin back if required on road. check out the photo's on the SR20 LWB zook and you will see what I mean.

Got me thinking now.
Any disadvatages of running a 3/4? thinking it will be pinned onroad.
any tech web links that people are hoarding would be super as well.
cheers
I haven't experienced any negative handling or spring war issues. I have also never had the ubolts loosen in the 6-7 years I've been running this setup. They are also engineereable with a locking mechanism for on road.

a normal spring is 1/2 of an elipse
so 3/4 eliptic is a normal spring pluss half a spring = so 3/4 of an elipse
and 1/4 eliptic has half a spring but upside down + so its 1/4 of an elipse shape

Hey nicbeer, have a serious search on pirate as the have been though a major 3/4 elliptic stage in the last few years. They have some really good posts with great pics as well.
I dont give a crap about whingers saying not to say pirate, but thats where i found the best info for my 3/4 conversion.
