Little 'dilemma' about driving on the beach
Hey all
I'm driving up to wedge island soon for the wkend, which is a reasonable beach drive in terms of distance, a few patches of it get a bit hairy.
Anyways, I have a totally stock NT zook with 2" and 30" muddies on it. I have my old set of 27" ATs in the shed.
I was considering putting my smaller tyres back on - the muddies are monoforms and have pretty thick sidewalls that don't bag out too well unless you let them down to ~8psi. And the car is noticably slower on road, so I'll have lost a little wheelspeed. I've never really driven much on the beach...
So which tyre do you guys think I'm best off with?

I agree, I've driven beaches on both muddies, and all terrains, and unless your trying to do steep dune climbs, or spraying your mates with big rooster tails of sand... there isn't too much difference. Just keep your speed/momentum constant and you'll have no troubles...... zooks love the sand anyway.

well dude i will go the other way and say i would go smaller A/Ts
I found on my zook the original tyres seemed to go better i think cos it could rev out easier and bag well.
and also i had a re-tread style monowhatever muddy shiat itself after being deflated on the beach, it bubbled.

Neil I have done a few trips with exactly what you are saying, and truthfully if its for a drive to the wedge, then I say go back to standard. If you had gearing then the mudders would be okay, but without it your better off on the standard tires.OldGold wrote:Hey all

Trust me I tested this heaps with my old setup with 29" mudders!
+ way better fuel economy

I did the trip on easter wkend. 31's rocked. aird them down to 5psi at lancelin and hit the track the fist bit then dropped onto the beach past the heads.(it was not passable before this due to the beach erosion from the storms) I did it mostly in 2wd or 4lo 3rd gear for the boggy bits.
I drive on the beach all the time.

i went to wedge about a week a go on the bfg's i got off Dewse,
had them on 10psi all the way,leave good roosters in 2wd too.
i thought they were better than my a/t's

Either will be fine.
Zooks are great on the sand!
Tyre pressures make all the differance!!!
Run 10psi as a starting point.
You can go lower especialy if you have tyres that are a bit stiff.
Just remember not to go too stupid with sharp cornering (ie donuts ) and you will be fine at around 8psi.

hey oldgold i got to wedge in about 15minutes along the beach,
drove near the water it was rock hard.sat on about 80km at on point, there is a few spots where you have to go up high and that is about it.
just check the tide before you go.

I have mine down to 4psi a couple of times. bags out a big but not too much. u can run 0psi with stiffer tyres ok. I have on 1 tyre and did not really notice it for a while.jumankum wrote:Geez you guys are talkin some low pressures! Specilally for a Zook Whats the sand made out of down there!
Where is wedge point? Is it even down....
Wedge has spooky sand dunes where one spot is hard enough to drive on top and the other foot is 1ft under.

We've done the Wedge Trip a couple of times and the sand is pretty boggy, but if you rip into it fast enough you plough right through no problems. We did the whole trip once with 40psi all round and 2WD in the pajero, I wouldnt recommend it but it was getting a bit late on that occasion. You'd flog along hit a soft patch, drop a cog and plant it, was pretty fun.
As for tyres, I'd go with whatever lets you rev the crapper out of it the easiest, so that would be the smaller sized ATs.

I'm trying to line up a 1lt case before then... but I'm not sure it's going to happen so I think the ATs will go on, if anything just to make the road journey a little nicer.
Gunna pull a coupla load leafs off tomorrow (if I have time) and try track down some longer shocks later on just to make it a little scarier
Goin up for the long wkend, bulk bundy will guarantee a good time

Yeah man, if you get bogged and no one comes along, you always have your bundy to keep you happy!
Its a pretty quick trip up to the Wedge tracks, so tyre size shouldnt make too much of a difference to how you go along the road, its pretty good tar! with that said theres a few decent looooong inclines that the diesel boys I know have to pluck 3rd gear and crawl up, pajero stays in 5th and eats the road
