Rebuilding Impco Gas converter?

well, after some of the threads recently on gas, i was wondering what is involved in a rebuild of an impco gas converter i.e. is there a simple (and cheap) seal kit that you can buy, is the actual pulling apart and putting together of the converter hard to do, are there any settings that will be buggered up by pulling it apart, how do you get rid of the waxy build up inside, and anything else that i would need to know about doing this, as well as IS IT REALLY WORTH DOING IT MYSELF (cost wise)?

one thing to look out for is the cost of the kit, some of the brand of gas convertors we deal with at work by the time you buy the kit and put it together it can be the price of a new convertor once you have added your time on it

pull the converter appart first !........ CAREFULLY !!!!

if ya carefull then the diaphram will be reusable.

Shop around for a gasket kit........ prices vary in a huge way from one place to another......

use warm water to remove the grunge buildup. ( a worn soft tooth brush works well too )

check for water corosion in the water jackets in the converter ( lot of ppl miss that one ! ) and dont be frightened to dig the crustys out either ( the pointy bit on the end of a testlight is excelent for this )

Most inportantly take ya time ;)
for a "learner" it should take around 2 hours max to rebuild one.

you say prices vary hugely, i got quote 2day for impco model L kit, approx $100 for aussie made kit, or approx $160 - $170 for an impco kit. How much should i be paying for a rebuild kit?

You really shouldnt need to buy a full kit..... Just buy the gaskets you damage when ya strip it.
Like I said before ..... do it carefully .......

I only ever buy what I need to do a rebuild and to date the highest I've spent on "kits" so to speak, has been around the $40 mark.

The other option is to make ya own gaskets..... all ya need is a hole punch, good pair of scissors, and a razorblade. A large sheet of gasket paper is around $20 and there will be enough paper to do 3 or 4 converters !

That only leaves the diaphram..... its usually around the $20 mark but again if ya carefull you wont need to buy a new one just for the sake of spending money.

Remember .... all you are really doing is removing the wax grunge from the converter....
No-one buys an engine rebuild kit just the degrease the motor !! ;)

I went to buy a kit for my lg motor gas converter but it was discontinued and i could only use the main diaphram so instead of paying $100 and only being able to use 1 part, i got a new one for $165 !
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

i was quoted 275 for a new impco model L, for what converter was that price?

It is an LG motor gas ( made in mel ) P6 converter but they do make an impco type that would be the same price. Its the B2 model.
