Double arm or 2 OE arms?

Post by v840 »

Im about to start my springover on my 40 but unfortunately I cant seem to get hold of a double arm. Ive tried Big Balls, Offroad Industries and Superior. All have a wait of at least three weeks which, been the impatient child I am, is too long.
Is it possible (legal) to get two steering arms from a cruiser, flip one, and weld them together using bracing in the appropriate place? I want to get it done professionally as I only have an arc welder and my welding is best described as bodgy. Any ideas of cost, legality, people willing to do it in sydney etc.? I have seen this done on a few sprungover cruisers before but Id rather do it once legally.
Thanks in advance.

Give Sam at Overkill (Hornsby) a call. He does them.

mine cost me 40 bucks to get another arm from the wreckers

all you have to do is get someone to mill the tops of both arms flat

then place them to gether and weld with the arc using weld all rods thats the go

I'd be heating them a bit before welding them also i'd put a gusset in between the 2 arms for added strength  like the superior ones BTW theres are only $150 not bad i recon. ;)
Lockers or Knockers ,both will make for fun.

Short answer is no, engineers frown on this, but there is an exeption to every rule, someone may pass it, but I doubt it.......

Some engineers may pass it after stric x-ray examination for weld penitration and casting structure. Every engineer i spoke to always asked weather ANY steering component was welded on my hilux.

Personally i would just wait for the double arm, it would safter in the long run.

Thank for the info guys. I called overkill and they had one for a hundred bucks so Im pickng that up today. I was quoted $460 from ori (whats the story?). Different materials?, cast as opposed to welded?
