1.3 Engine Troubles
Hey guys,
I have reciently been given a 85 drover with the G13a in it. The only problem is it has been sitting on the farm not moving for about 10 years. It was blowing a lot of smoke, running rough and getting hot. After testing the compression, which was acceptable, 150 to 160psi on all cylinders I pulled the head off, and found out it had a blown head gasket. I got the head reconditioned and put it back on the motor. (There were other issues with the head as well) The water system was also blocked so I cleared it out. I have replaced the carb with a reconditioned toyota one (bolts straight on) so I can use manual choke. Now the engine runs beautifully however it is blowing a lot of grey smoke. I originally thought it was fuel from being too rich, but after getting the carb right it still bellows the smoke out. It is almost non existant when cold It gets worse as it warms up. I believe the smoke is due to oil, as it has used a considerable amount in just 50km. There also appears to be considerable amount of blow by, as smoke pumps out the breather on top. Like i said the compression is fairly good so I can't see how it could be the rings. The engine has also only done 75k. Sorry about the long post. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

U replace the oil and sparks i am guessing when u first fired it up?
usually blue is oil and black is fuel smoke... something must be expanding as it get warm and creates problems. (how is the water consumption?)

The yota carb is off a 1.3L 4c engine. From what I can tell they were in corolla's from about 79 - 84 and Lite-aces.(cost me $25 from wreckers) Make sure you get the studs and thermal spacer off the corolla/lite-ace manifold, it bolts straight on and i havent made any mods to anything really other than running a choke cable into the cab. I havent really had a chance to test this setup offroad because of the oil problem but on cold starts with the manual choke it starts really good and the bit of driving around town ive done its pretty responsive.
I did a wet compression test and it bumped the compression up to 200psi. So the rings are buggered. So I went out and bought some Lucas oil stableiser and it has thickened the oil up enough to stop most of the smoking. Going to put a vit motor in at some stage soon so not going to re-ring this engine. The Lucas is a sweet interum fix.

Well for some reason zuk motors seem to suffer from the rings beening all gummed up and stay in the piston. Try some decarbonizer spray from auto barn, get it to operating temp and spray it in the carb until the engine stalls. SPray more into the carb and turn it over so it gets in side the engine without firing it up. Let it sit for an hour or so. Them crank it up and take it for a hard drive, might be able to ungum the rings.
Worth a try.
