Aust. 4wd Monthly Cliffhanger - 29 Oct to 1st November

Due to an overwhelming response, feedback and constant nagging, Hobzee and I have added to additional classes to the Cliffhanger outback event.

There will be 4 classes.
Unregistered- where almost anything goes. Ideally suited for buggies, rock crawlers and Tuff Truck machines. Roll cages & harnesses required.
C Class- 6pt roll cages & harnesses.
B Class- 4pt roll cages.
A Class- club level 4x4 vehicles; no roll cages.

This means there will also be 4 winners.

Everyone will need front mounted winches, a gps unit, good lighting and helmets. For safety reasons, courses may vary between classes so that everyone faces a challenge without undue risk.

Typically every day will have 1 speed trial, 1 winch stage, 1 navigation and 1 3hr combo. Vehicles will rotate through these in groups. Each night there is 1 further stage where all vehicles are together (All up - 20 stages). Progressive scores will be announced every morning and there will be a re-sorting of groups accordingly.

Each day has a different theme. Every stage on a given day can be observed from one vantage point, so spectators don’t miss any of the action.

The all inclusive price is $1300 per team (one vehicle & 2 adults), $325 per adult spectator, $165 per child spectator under 16. Only want to spectate for a day or two, no problems- Adults $90 per day and under 16 is $50 per day. Everyone gets breakfast, lunch, dinner and camping. Spectators do need to register for catering purposes.

There will be a massive free presentation bon fire party on the Tuesday night where trophies and prizes will be awarded for all classes. There will be 4 winners.
There's no mucking around and you don't have to take too much time off work. Turn up Friday afternoon and head off as early as Tuesday night, having done 20 really full on stages in outback terrain. What a BLAST!

Received a great idea from a Navrun competitor.

We are going to host a 3 hr navrun for spectators each day at no extra charge to spectators. But they need to be members of CCDA to do this as well as have a GPS and a half descent vehicle with good tyres as there will be cross terrain in minor rocks and sand. No other race specs required.

Just a note to all thinking of competing in the Cliffhanger. Many people have been ringing me asking if we are going to do ridiculous water crossings (where really they were designed for a watercraft not a vehicle) as they don't wish to waterlog their trucks.

The answer in short is "no". There will be a bit of mud but there will not be stages where we will drown you trucks, who wants wet carpet, stuffed electrics and a stuffed car.

Is any one else planing on going from Brisbane

I want to organise a flat bed truck for transport however the more comp vehicles the better. If any one knows contact details of any good transport companies can they let me know.

I need a company that is quick and reliable as i need my truck back in time for the Superior all terain the following weekend.

Any help or ideas would be apreciated.

Bigmav, one tip with transport is that you should get a cheaper rate going home Nth bound, because back loads out of adelaide are hard to come by most of the time when they're going back to Brisbane, but it depends what company you deal with too. I would just ring around a couple of the national carriers, if they can't help you they will be able to point you in the right direction anyway, a couple maybe worth calling are:

The property is just 70k north of the Adelaide to Sydney/Brisbane road. Seems all trucks from Adelaide to the East Coast go via Wilcannia.

Big Mav, if you enter I will throw in a free GU steering box. If you haven't already got one you will want one. If have got one you will want a spare... Gees I'm cruel..

PS there's another GU steering box going to the next GQ who enters.

We could drag it out over an extra week if it made a difference but most people count the cost of having days off work and wanted a 4 day.

There are as manay stages as OBC but entry is $1200 cheaper, you can take 4 days less off work and don't have to travel 100's of k's every night between properties - and we feed you.

But granted it is still a fair bit of lolly - hope to see you maybe next year. Start saving. $25 a week from now and for the 2006 event you're in fella

A couple of updates. As you all know Aust. 4wd Monthly will be there taking photos, etc and doing a big write up. In fact they will be supporting this event for the next 3 years and beyond. Simon from 4wdTV has just emailed me and they will be there filming the event also.

Silver City 4wd in Broken Hill is letting all competitors use their workshop if needed for a small fee, and they will also have a tow truck on standby. Kevin from West Darling Hotel in Broken Hill has also offered discount accommodation and most importantly an after hours key for any competitor needing a bed for the night if they are working back on their truck at Silver City.

We are getting many emails in regards to the regs. of classes. Please do not read into it too much. Our classes are very simple and there are very few restrictions. But please email me if you have any queries.

And remember For spectators we will also be throwing in an optional free Navrun event, a few hours in duration per day. Any vehicle will be able to compete. Just a bit of additional fun.

I am halfway through a chev 400 engine conversion and cutting my guards out to fit 38.5 * 16 * 15 inch claws. If I can get it done in time I will be there, if its anything like the Outback Challenge it will be a good event.

4 days is plenty and $ 1300 is reasonable compared with $2500 for the Outback. Hopefully some fast sections through the desert, should be a blast.

We are have weekly meetings now and getting excited. They have had plenty of rain. We are staying out of deep water but expect some slippery river beds.

Hey Hobzee,

We'll be coming in E's Nissan....Club Class.....and I bet u I'll be driving it cold turkey, getting use to a manual again and all, but hey we are so looking forward to being there at the inaugral Cliffhanger and having the best time. Love the setup idea of camping all together etc.
S/C remains under the car cover and we still haven't decided what to do, patch her up some more and keep going at a few more challenges or what.
It's interesting to see that the other older, frequently used trucks are beginning to show serious signs of wear and tear too and all are far more 'appropriate' vehicles.
Starting over is too hard for us.......so we'll see.

Old Comp trucks tend to die - some quicker than others but even the best ones still die. Sounds like the count down for a coupla rangies at Alpine...

That's kinda why I sold my GU. It was still good but yet showing the signs after 3 OBC's. Another year and it would have been worth $20K less. I got new price for it but that was still a great price for the buyer as he saved maybe $50K in set up. He wanted something to tow his boat - what the...

I am looking forward to seeing how the various classes stack up against each other in this event.

I am still getting a few calls in regards to Classes and what they entail. The Classes & Scruterneering for this event are very basic, and I mean basic. Points we are making are that we are not as fussy as other events and some road worthy items, stickers, etc are not issues at this event.

You are right in saying that we really won't make any money with spectators as for as low as $80 per day per adult spectator we feed them, breakfast, lunch & dinner, plus give them free stuff, eg clothing and other apparel in which we have had to purchase, and plus also in giving them free Navruns to do. But we wouldn't change this as like all our events we stage we look after our customers and make sure they get their monies worth.

The Cliffhanger however is a spectator event and we have a good number already attending. I realise rock crawling attracts a bigger audience for obvious reasons however our event is a different kettle of fish and attacts a different audience as well.

Was catching up with property owner last night - They have had a lot of rain. You can expect mud - and a lot of it. Water not deep but plenty of mud. Said we have a great camp spot next to water.

BYO Drinking water - plenty water to wash in on site.

As Mock said that is very over the top expensive 2 adults + 2 kids is $980.00. To come up from Melbourne will be around $2000.00,that is not an interstate spectator event, come on.

Sorry Fglass, as we said by the time we feed spectators and the rest we make no money, I would like to cut the price in half but unfortunetly that is the way it is. Mega costs add up running these large events and this doesn't even include our time, if it did, then forget it, I'd rather be on the dole.

Although we are the same price as the Outback Challenge, at least we provide food, navruns, toilets, etc to the spectators.

We already have a good amount of happy registered spectators knowing that they will be looked after by us, like we do at all our 9 4wd events we run each year.

Maybe we shall see you at one of our Navruns, which is a very reasonable price of $75.00 per competing adult, which includes dinner & breakfast plus 2 full days of 4wd competition- bring your family, under 18 no charge.

Oh my god complain complain

you either wanna have a go or not. If your looking to compete at this level then this is how much it costs and your even getting something for your money. Same goes for the spectators. Outback Challenge costs $350 per person plus fuel plus accomadation before in Broken Hill and after and you get......... A yellow Tshirt!!! (this year we got a red esky bag) no food no toilets no showers etc etc

I think if you shop around you will see all events at this level are very simular in entry and spectator costs and you don't get looked after as it looks like we will in Whitcliffs

Yes I will be there I can't wait it is shapping up to be another great event on the calander. (For the record I have spectated at Outback for four years happily paying the price)

I suppose if ya want a cheap weekend then don't buy a 4wheel drive.

Hi , I'm looking for a navi/co-driver/ winch wench, Got this comp buzz and my usual navi is going away for the long weekend , the comp entered is the cliff hanger. 4 days of fun, laughter, screeming and tears ! Promise it will be a blast so any interested people please contact me. I am Melbourne based and will need a second vehicle which i have to be driven up to white cliffs soooo..... you need a license and need to be able to drive for ten or eleven hours non stop except for refuelling, nope don't even stop for toilet breaks !!!

At the 2005 XI spectator cost were around $165 (Special Park Rates) per vehicle, regardless of # of spectators in Vehicle. Last day they were charged $5 per head to get into comp area. Presentation diner was extra as well around the $35 mark. The only thing that was supplied for the 8 days were hot showers, toilets & camping. Food was extra if you wanted to buy it, otherwise bring your own. So with what the Cliffhanger is asking is fair for all the work that goes into doing such an event. As the saying goes "user pays".

I know the cost to set up these events and the Cliffhanger being so far of the beaten track the costs are very high, so if you want a good event you pay for it. As per the entry fee same applies.

The 2006 XI (23rd september - 30th September) will be $1500 for the 8 day event which will include handouts to competitors (etc shirts, caps, special number plates, stubbie coolers & "T" shirts) spectators will also get a special park rate for the 8 days as well.

So if you want to enter a good event just pay and enjoy. As I know you will at the Cliffhanger.
