Fuel Tank Issue - What is in there??

Post by Toyo Truck »

Hey guys,

I went for a savage off road adventure into the Watagans yesterday,
and now I'm having problems with my Hilux single cab fuel tank.
I noticed when I shake the truck from side to side and let it go,
once it stops bouncing, I can hear the fuel sloshing around in the tank,
and on top of it what sounds like a piece of hard stuff (the prize)
floating around in the fuel tank, and it hits the side of the tank as the fuel
sloshes against the side.
No doubt this is bad,
But I drove 1 hour to Morisset, started 4WDing at 10AM, finished at 11:30PM, then drove another 1 hour home. So that is like 12 hours of hardcore 4 wheeling, through mud and up rocks and 1 near roll (arond 30 deg angle and idling) and 2 hours of transport stages.
I did notice it spluttered 3 times on the way home at 110Kms but never stopped.

It was only once I got home checking the panel damage when
I realised this fuel thingy and that the battery tray had snapped off and the
battery was resting on the radiator hose for the entire trip home at least.
Kept going though...

Anyone had a bonus prize floating around in the back of the fuel tank after a hard drive?? maybe its just like a big kinder-surprise!!!
but one that costs me money when I win! D'oh. :bad-words:

Cheers,
Bart

Could be a breather tank thing that connects to the top of the tank and has the breather line run into it.

My GQ tank has one and it was loose. It slides onto a bracket type setup on the top of the tank.

Just take the lid off and have a look.

OK Cool.

Might have to crack open the fuel tank for a looksee.
What is the easiest way to get a fuel tank out of the car
and onto the ground?? I've never done this, but it can't be
too hard...can it? Is there danger of exploding myself with
fuel vapors or is that cool once you get the lid off??
What is the safe procedure for doing this?

Also,
while I'm at it, can I move my fuel filler as well?

Cheers,
Bart

Went to Stocktons last weekend with the tank as is.
I didn't get a chance to fix it before I went.
She went OK, but I was pinging a little and one time when I switched
the car off, the car kept running a bit before it cuts off?
The car was at normal operating temp and was running OK except for
a slight pinging noise before I switched it off?
It really smells/sounds like the car is running too rich. Could this be from
the fuel tank? Or would it be something more like the timing or the carby, etc?

Cheers,

You were pinging, or the ute? :D

If you need help getting the tank out gimme a call, they are a peice of piss in hilux's, especially considering its lifted.

As for the pinging, when did you last change plugs etc and check the timing? Could also be carbon build-up in the cylender too, there are a 1000 things it could be really.
