just been on the phone to abt. I have honestly never had such excellent service. full explanations backed up by thorough product development knowledge. looks as if edelbrock shocks are the go.
has anyone used these

thanks mate. Do you think they are suitable for the increased load of a gq? Also my tyre combinations are pretty heavy say 75kg each, surely as the tyre bounces off an obsticle the shock is in compression stroke and will transfer the tyre's force to the body as a normal shock would.
The reason i ask is that i was going to run the fox or racerunner 2.5" non coilover shocks with remote reseviour which have a far greater at least double the piston area to absorb and dissipate compression impacts. one importer said they run one single unit on the rear of off road buggies that do 160kph and they hold up fine with the massive travel too.
cheers mate

This is a timely subject. My GU is being fitted with Fox Racing Shox, triple piggyback with remote cannister. Make sure that the one you choose has internal bump stops. OnTrack4x4 is doing the installation and it's complicated. The shocks are huge...had to cut a big hole through the wheel arch and the top end of the shock is in the engine bay. It's not finished yet, so I can't tell you how it rides.
what sorta $$$ for the whole setup if you can pm me it would be good.
also why the 3xpiggy back, i am assuming you mean the 3 x external bypass. is there a real benefit as they are like $300 each dearer. I intend to keep my coils as they are perfectly matched to my truck, so its just the shocks i want.
can't wait to see pics and hear what you think.
I am so tired of seeing hard earned being wasted on underdesigned for application shocks. to me they all seem shite except for these big $$ jobs, so i am happy to lash out just want to be certian as to the brand. what made you go with fox, to me they look the best.
I like the way you can rebuild and valve them yourself, whereas the edelbrock you cant (they won't supply parts).
did you look at the edelbrock which are $200 less each than the fox non coil 2.5's and apparently run 60%cooler.
did you look at the race runner with shim stacks like moto shocks they are a tad cheaper than the fox
any insight would be much appreciated

Fox Racing refers to the external bypass as piggyback for some reason. I was told that these have internal bump stops, so it saved the cost of pneumatic bump stops that we were thinking of adding to the front suspension. Went with Fox because there is good local support for them. These can be re-built so if there's a problem we can have them fixed locally. King offroad was the other option, but Fox just looks a bit better in quality.

Not true (the unrebuildable bit - dunno bout the supply of parts.
I got one of my Edelbrock Xtreme's resealed and regassed by Suspension Technology Australia (ABT4x4's shock consultant of choice) after a wayward spring knocked the remote can connection off.
Parts were *very* well priced as was the minimal labour charge.

the edelbrock can be rebuilt. abt would rather do it them selves than let others do it as mistakes in assembly may cause people to think less of the product rather than the guy that made a mistake in assembly. i can full relate to and understand this. personally in my situation it just seems a real pita, when i live in qld and have rebuilt f&r motocross shocks myself many times, which make 4x4 shocks look primative. playing with components is perhaps my favourite part about this sport thats all.

Suspension Technology Australia has an amazing setup. He does development for Brock racing, the control shock for the Brutes, the Aus spec Terracan (I think - It was one of the wannabe 4wds), the offroad racing buggys, he is designing a suspension kit for Aussie Army tanks , others I cant remember.
He has a shock dyno and PC that tells him exactly which chit inside the shock needs mods as it simulates the style of driving you intend with the vehicle weight you intend.
Ie overextention, rapid oscillation, combinations.... its
