Free wheeling hub advice needed Hilux

Hi All, I want to convert my auto hubs to free wheeling type can someone advise what type and where I can get a set.

I have a IFS Hilux SR5 dual cab 2.7 Petrol RZN169R

Is there is a how to link?

Heya Wal, I'm in the same position.......wanting to change my ADD hubs(live hubs as opposed to the old auto hub system) to manual hubs.

I'm just not sure if its a matter of just changing the hubs or whether or not anything has to be done to the vacuum system ??

Find a set of manual hubs from an IFS hilux of the same model.
(some earlier hubs from 4runner ifs were slightly different in the clutch
width)

Unbolt your drive plates and install the new manual hubs.

The vacuum system does not have to be changed and it will work
the same as it did before with the hubs locked in.
Just have to make sure you don't push the 4WD button while driving
and the hubs not locked in.BANG!!!

You can disable the ADD system but you are better off finding a non ADD
side axle to remove the vacuum actuator all together.
The non ADD axle are heaps stronger.(but still weak compared to the live
axles)

Having a bastard of a time getting the drive plates off, any secret to getting them off? (dont have a puller).

So you still have to hit the engage button after locking the manual hubs? What will go bang if the button is pushed without the hubs locked in?

Thanks for the info and the link guys. I removed the auto hub and end cap to see what's inside. On the end of the axle there is a bolt and flat washer 12mm bolt head. I have no idea what it does. I tightend the wheels bearings just a touch as they were loose. Looks like an easy job, as long as I can get some hubs.

Nothing will go bang if the hubs are locked.

It's only if you are moving with the hubs unlocked and push the button.
It will go bang in the transfer as the front drive shaft is not moving.
It's like trying to put it in 1st gear without using the clutch.

Have to "pop" off the end cap and remove the center bolt ( 12mm) and washer
from the axle.

I think , on mine anyway , there is 2 holes that are threaded in the drive plate.
Find 2 bolts and screw them into the threads.This will force the plates off
as you screw the bolts in.
Have you got the cone washers off yet?

I will have some IFS free wheeling hubs for sale in a month or two if anyone wants them.
Im not quite ready yet though.

no I haven't, thought they might have to come off but they appeared fastened to the drive plate, spose there an easy way to get these off too ?

No probs grassynoll, I'm glad we are both finding out what we need to know.

Do you have a set of FWHs already?

I had a quick look at removing mine, the cone washers are the hard bit to remove. I loosened all the nuts then tapped the hub with a soft-face hammer and it popped free.

Yeah Wal all done, I ended up doing what Dazza suggested with the bolts in the threads, popped right out. Ended up getting AVM hubs for $210.00.

Good job garssyknoll, Where's the pix?

I was thinking of going factory hubs, but AVM is not out of the question. Any reason you chose AVM over the factory type? I'm undecided which way to go.

Factory Aisin hubs are stronger and more reliable than aftermarket ones.

True Wal, I beleive they are stronger. Probably not something you are going to break in a hurry (plenty of other things that will go first on an IFS hilux ). However, they appear to be good value from all reports . Would have liked a pair of Warm premium hubs, but I got my front diff centre cheaper I think .
