Engineered with toys

Post by NIK »

Im just doing a bit more research before I go ahead with the hilux diffs. I just spoke to a local guy that can do the swap and he said the rear springs would have to be widened to match the diffs, not the purches moved to match the springs. My zook is a nt lwb.
Has anyone gone through this that can help or recommend a engineer in the maitland area that I could talk to.
The same guy talked about break booster issuses and even widening the zooks frame!! The price he quoted for labour only was double what Ive been quoted elsewhere and they included parts (minus diffs of course)
Thanks Nik.

not sure why he would want to widen the chassis. or the spring thing.

I'd just go somewhere else or do it yourself!

I used an engineer in newcastle. he passed mine with hilux diffs.

only problem is now I'm trying to get it blue slip and the guy was an idiot and rang a tech support guy instead of asking me about the engineers report. long story short, the manager for light vehicle standards saw a picture of my car, and said it was too unstable at 80. and that was from his office in sydney.
its a spring over zook, using flat springs with 37's, which was all engineered, but he said that the engineers report means nothing, if I don't comply with RTA rules.
I now have to wait until they finish writing up new rules to do with modified 4WD's.
which sux, due to the fact that I got in before the rules were in!!
but what can you do, he is the big boss.

hope this doesn't turn you off doing this mod.

just do it to a regoed zook, then get an engineers report and the cops will leave you alone. and the RTA doesn't have anything to do with your truck.

just don't chuck laps in newy, because they will send you to the pits, which is were you will need to abide by RTA rules not engineering.

rumor is that the new rules are lift restrictions and stuff like that.
means Im stuffed.
37" above 26" standard is 7.5" lift
spring over 5" on lux diffs
longer shackle 1"
= 13.5" of lift
but its more than a foot wider. with heavier diffs and tyres, so the COG is better than standard.
they should bring on a swerve test. it will smash it!

sorry for long post.
but I spose its still relevant, as you seem to care about legalities.

I live in maitland too. come and have a look at mine if you want ideas!

enjoy ashley

Thanks Ashley, the reason Im getting it done by a shop is so for one the work is alot better than I could ever do but also I want to get it engineered so hopfully it will be easier. Did you have your rear springs widened or move the perches on the diff?
Can I ask who engineered yours?
I,ll definatley have to come see you.
Thanks Nik

there was a discussion about this the other day on another forum. http://www.perth4x4.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4491

looks like they have abolished the swerve test, and u can have an engineered lift to 6 inches above stock, total. so by rights i should be ok :) only got 5..

The lane change test in WA has NOT been abolished if you have a lift hight then 50mm, this includes tyres, suspesion and body lift. Look here -> http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/myve ... B-109A.pdf

To do any modification to a car, you need to apply for the mod and when you have approval, you would made the changes get enginerring and do a lane chnage test (if the lift is over 50mm) and then go over the pits. see here http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/form ... rodveh.pdf
