Hi Guys,
I have the above motor in my 80 with a Toyota 4sp Auto. A problem has happened to me twice and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
The first time it happened was on a short hill climb in low range at about 30deg going up the hill, the motor lost all drive, blew a heaps of oil smoke and the turbo made a popping noise.
When trying to restart the motor it wouldn't turn over and acted like it had been hydraulic'd. After leaving the motor for about 10 mins it started in a puff of smoke, was smokey for about 2 mins more then was fine. This was about 3 weeks ago.
The last night I had stopped in the brake down lane on the freeway to check on something tied in the trailer, pulling back onto the freeway and giving it a bit to get up to speed, the same thing happened. Now this was on flat ground but it was doing about 3000rpm in 3rd. It was towing a 6x4 box trailer with a light load.
The motor has about 30,000K's on it from brand new. The only thing I can think out is that maybe some oil is getting past the rings when the motor is under load and going out the exhaust which is then going into the turbo. The thing is I towed a rangie on a car trailer from gosford to menai last week with no probs whatsoever.
Any Ideas would be great.
Thanks

what color smoke out the exhaust, black or grey? If the motor has excessive blowby (a problem exacerbated (made worse) by the turbo) it may be bringing vaporised oil in the blowby out from the rocker cover and into the intake manifold. Sometimes the oil will collect in the pipe and dump a load of oil into the manifold, hence the big cloud of smoke. Run the motor with the oil filler cap off, is there any hot gas escaping from here? If so, you may have found the cause. Air leaks in a diesel fuel system will cause surging/flat spots in power delivery and can also be harmful to the injection pump. Change all rubber hoses to rated clear hoses to see if this is happening (but I don't think it is an air leak problem.) check all air hoses both sides of the turbo on the intake side and look for oil. Oil may also be getting past the seals in the turbo and getting sucked through under boost.
Built, not bought.

They smoke was grey but it is not fumey from the oil filler. When it blew the smoke there was a strong oil smell though.
